Feature a Friend

Meet Laura

Over the years, Fashion Trends and Friends has highlighted interesting women and friends we’ve met along our blogging journey. We’re as much about friends as we are about fashion. Fashion is always more fun when shared with girl friends! Last week, I shared that Laura and I met on Instagram. We talked about Fashion Over 50. To read that post and watch our conversation click HERE. Today we thought it would be fun to share more about Laura with you. We think you’ll agree that Laura is super fun, very motivational and inspirational!

1.  Tell us about yourself?  What are your interests and passions?

“My true passion is helping others live their healthiest life but also my growing family. Lake life & sunsets feed my soul but I do love learning about other people and what ignites them.”

Laura is with Barbie of BarbieHolmes – You should check out Barbie if you aren’t aready following her!

2.  Why and when did you get started on Instagram/social media?

“I originally started on FB & IG when my kids were in college to keep track of them. However, when I started my business in Arbonne 5 years ago I realized the importance of social media to help connect and meet other people who might be needing what we have to offer. So, I went public and became intentional with growth and have met a ton of people who I have also been blessed to meet in real life from all over the country.”

Laura “The Fizz Stick Lady”

3.  When and why did you get started with Arbonne?

“Oh gosh, mine is an interesting story. I had been using and loving the products for 9 years before I ever said yes to the business. I had giant chip on my shoulder called ego and didn’t want to be the lipstick lady at all of the pool parties. However, my life took a turn when I had lost my BFF to brain cancer. I couldn’t help but wonder why her and why not me and more importantly if her, could I be next? I already knew that Arbonne follows a very strict ingredient policy. So, while Sissy (BFF) was on her journey, I kept noticing that a lot of ingredients she needed to avoid lined up with Arbonne’s Do Not Use list. I had “ ah ha” moments all over the place and quickly switched my brand completely. I then felt compelled to teach others to be just as mindful of what they were putting in and on their bodies and the importance of clean products and especially clean eating. Now, I am happy to say that I actually love being known as the Fizz stick lady at all of the pool parties.

4.  What’s the best part of being in your 50’s?

“I would say for me it’s all about being in good health. Having the energy to run and play with our grandchildren. Also, having confidence and believing in myself while knowing that I am enough to accomplish all that I want to.”

5.  What advice do you have for women our ages?

“Make sure to hydrate, get plenty of sleep, eat clean & cut back on sugar (it’s harmful to our skin) and wear sunscreen daily. Don’t be afraid to start something new either. I started my business 5 years ago at 52 and while nervous at first, I have never looked back. It’s never too late to try something new and live your best & healthiest life possible.”
Be well,

Laura

I love that Laura ends with “it’s never too late to try something new and live your best and healthiest life possible”. That totally aligns with my mantra of: You’re never too old! It’s never too late! Wear what you love! You can follow Laura here: Instagram: Malibumom

Fashion Over 50

Fun with Friends

Laura of MalibuMom and I recently became friends through Instagram. We participate in a group that supports each other daily. Laura and I immediately connected over many things. One of her posts on Instagram was a picture of her wearing the cutest graphic Elan t-shirt. I reached out and asked where she got the shirt and proceeded to order one for my self!

I opted for ordering the black tee! You know I’m a huge fan of wearing and styling graphic tees. To see a previous blog post on styling graphic tees, click HERE.

Laura and I decided it would be fun to go live on Instagram and discuss fashion over 50. Obviously, it’s a topic I’m very passionate about! Laura had done lives in the past. This was my first live. To say we had fun chatting, is an understatement. We hope you enjoy watching our live chat as we discuss our fashion thoughts for over 50…

Hope you come back next week for a Fashion Trends and Friends “Feature a Friend – Laura”! We’ll be sharing Laura’s story with you!

Hair Accessories

Trends for 2021

Accessories can make all the difference in an outfit! When I think of accessories, earrings, bracelets, rings, purses, belts, etc. come to my mind. I don’t always think about hair accessories probably because I have a pixie! #shorthairdontcare! However, I’ve seen all the super cute, extra wide, embellished headbands and was willing to step out of my box and give it a try! Plus you know my thoughts: Accessories elevate a look from good to great! Why not experiment?! Here is a list of the current hair accessory trends according to WHO WHAT WEAR for your consideration:

  • Organza Scrunchies (as seen above)
  • Bucket Hats
  • Wild West Hats
  • Ultra Wide Headbands
  • Retro Driving Scarves
  • Embellished Headbands
  • XL Clips
  • Mini Jaw Clips
  • Claw Clips
  • Maximalist Clip Stacks

Head Band Trend

Hair accessories can be tricky depending on the style and length of your hair. By now I’m confident that you’ve seen the big, thick headbands with all kinds of embellishments. Since I have short hair, I didn’t really think this trend would work on me. However, I was willing to give it a try especially on this headband that was on sale for only $3. at Target. I was pleasantly surprised that I could actually pull it off. This particular headband is velvet with large pearls. Who doesn’t love pearls? Lori even did a post on pearls titled “Pearls Are Always Appropriate” Jackie Kennedy Onassis. To read that post, click HERE.

By the way, I’m titling this picture Puppies and Pearls! What’s better than puppies and pearls?!

This yellow headband has been in my drawer for years! If you saw last week’s blog post, you know that we featured pops of color! Since yellow and gray are this year’s Pantone colors, I added my headband along with my yellow belt, pumps and shoes! Then I added my metal studded headband and lastly tried my rhinestone headband. One outfit but multiple looks! While these are skinny headbands, I say go with whatever feels most comfortable for you when adding accessories! If you like it and are comfortable and confident, you’ll look amazing!

You know that I love all things sparkly, glittery, shiny! Fancy should have been my middle name! This rhinestone headband holds a special place in my heart because I originally purchased it to wear for my vow renewal ceremony for our 25th wedding anniversary. Since this hoodie is embellished with rhinestone buttons, I felt my rhinestone headband was a nice add on hair accessory!

Fashionable Friends

For more hair accessory inspiration, I thought I would include some of my fashionable friends. I have met all of these wonderful women on Instagram. We participate together in #wearitwednesday and several you’ll recognize from Stylish Mondays.

Meet Jodie of Jodie’s Touch of Style! Jodie recently did a whole blog post titled: Advice on Decorative Hair Clip Style for Pixie Cuts. Additionally, Jodie features fashion trends on her blog along with her mom, and her mom’s friend.

“Hi! We are here to prove that it’s never too late to look great. Join myself, Jodie, along with my mom, Charlotte, and good friend, Lesley. We are 3 different decades of women with unique body shapes and style. This isn’t just any website. We want to have fun and be creative with our style.”

Jodie’s message resonates with me as that is exactly why Fashion Trends and Friends was started. You know the mantra: You can look cute and trendy no matter your age and no matter your size!

Heaadbands and Clips

Jodie: Headband Tie
Charlotte: Hair Clips
Lesley: Wide Headband

Meet Emily of jbowenandcompany. Emily is an attorney and mom of three. She enjoys living a slower and more meaningful life. Emily enjoys thrifting and encouraging secondhand. She loves the turban style headbands!

Hats

Hats are such a fun accessory! They just don’t look good on me! They’re the one accessory I don’t buy! However, we did do a previous blog post on hats, which you can read HERE. Therefore, I was very happy that some of my fashionable friends look great in hats and were willing to participate in today’s blog post!

Meet Lucy of lucybertoldi. “Here’s me in my favourite ‘hair’ accessory- hats!  Hats can elevate any look, even if it’s just for fun, they make a statement!” You can read Lucy’s blog is titled Lucybertoldi.com Confessions of a Montreal Styling Diva!

“My name is Lucy- I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I have a passion for fashion, art, history…well, honestly- all beautiful things! As the ultimate fashionista, I wear way too many hats! To name a few:

I’m a mother, wife, artist, fashion teacher/ stylist and make-up artist.  I read too much, sleep too little and am way too curious for my own good.  But in a nutshell…I’m just a 50+ diva chasing a beautiful life.”

Lucy passion for fashion is evident at every turn. Lucy often talks about #dopaminestyling – dressing that feels good! YES! This totally resonates with me! I often say that outfits evoke strong emotion and passion for me! How cute is she in her hats?! I love to see how she upcycles articles of clothing!

Meet Michele of seechele_styles. You probably recognize Michele from Stylish Mondays. Michele is a fellow educator and works with kindergarten students! She’s passionate about thrifting and ecofriendly fashion. I’m always impressed by her finds and how chic her styling is!

Meet Gwen of Gwen Lives Well. Gwen has recently started participating in our Stylish Mondays so you’ve seen her on my blog posts. Gwen recently wrote on one of her IG posts, “My blog is for savvy women looking for recs on all things delicious, ideas on what to wear, and everything from my fave new – and older – products, to info on the latest anti-aging/wellness treatments available today. Mix in a little attitude & midlife musings, and that’s GwenLivesWell. I’m also having fun with Shopping with Gigi, my little online boutique I started when I became a Gigi – (my grandma name!).😉

I keep hearing, find your niche, find your niche, but I’m interested in EVERYTHANGGG! I love it all, and I’m interested in it all. I’m also just me, not an expert on anything – a regular gal who knows what she likes and has fun sharing those likes and interests with other like-minded peeps.

I totally connect with Gwen because I also like “EVERYTHANGGG!” Except cooking! You know I don’t cook and have no desire to learn! LOL

Retro Driving Scarves

Thelma and Louise would be proud to see this trend popping back up. Though the old-school gals used soft scarves to protect their hair while riding top-down on the highway, it looks like the fashion girlies have co-opted the look for purely sartorial purposes. Not sure how I feel about this trend. I’m sure some will look adorable in a scarf and others – not so much. I’m pretty sure I fall in the later group! If I had a red convertible and looked this chic wearing a driving scarf, I’d be happy to jump on this trend!

Of course I had to share this throwback picture…throw waaaaaaaay back! As you can see by the time stamp, this was taken in July of ’67. My birthday is July 4th and I received this bike for me 6th birthday! I recall my mom making me wear “head scarves” when it was cold and windy. The believe was that it protected you from getting an ear infection or a head cold. This was definitely not a fashion statement back in the day! This is the one and only picture of me to my knowledge wearing a scarf. Do you recall wearing scarves?

On a recent run through Target, I noticed there were four sections similar to these two of various hair accessory choices! The nice thing about hair accessories is that they don’t cost much so if you want to experiment it won’t cost a fortune!

Stylish Monday and Link Up Party

A Pop of Color

If you’re an avid FTF fan, you know that I’m a huge fan of almost every color! Color doesn’t scare me and the brighter and bolder the better! However, some people are intimidated by bold colors so I suggest just adding small doses of color to your outfit of choice. A fail safe way to give color a chance is by adding a touch of color in your accessories! Therefore, I purpose you consider adding touches of color in your:

  • accessories
  • shoes or boots
  • belts
  • purses

Start with a Monochromatic Look

To get started, I opted for this casual look consisting of a graphic t-shirt in gray and white, animal skin print gray moto jacket, grayish/black jeans and a black belt and wedges. This is a look that is easy and safe to put together. I did wear it out exactly like this on a day date to Top Golf with Mr. FTF.

Jeans: My Closet (Old Navy)
Black Wedges and Black Belt: My Closet
Snakeskin Print Moto Jacket: Cali and Chance
Graphic T-Shirt: Cali and Chance

Red

Switching out the belt and shoes were easy in order to add a pop of red. Both of these items were already in my closet and red seemed like a perfect match with gray/black. The adding of color and switching out casual shoes to pumps elevates the look and adds some visual interest.

Next, I added my red purse! I found it interesting how my attitude and feelings about this look changed by simply adding the red! Color always lifts my mood and puts a spring in my step! Is there any other items of red I could have added? Yes! Red earrings or red bracelets would have been an easy add! Do you notice my red lipstick?

Yellow

Did you know that the Pantone colors for 2021 are gray and yellow? The official colors are called Illuminating (yellow) and Ultimate Gray. That is one of the reasons I elected to start with an all gray look. Yellow is one of my most favorite colors to wear so it made sense to add a pop of yellow!

Similar to my pop of red, I simply traded out the belt and shoes and added my yellow purse. All of these items were in my closet. This is also a simple way to update your wardrobe and add trend colors.

You could also add yellow earrings and bracelets. I happen to have a yellow headband so I added that…stayed tuned next week as I’ll be talking all about and sharing hair accessories!

Yellow Pumps: My Closet (Aldo)

Yellow always makes me happy and similar to red (really all colors) puts a pep in my step! I like to wear yellow year round and don’t really care if it’s the “it” color or not!

Always remember: If you love it, wear it! You’ll look fabulous no matter the trends!

Which color do you like the best? Are there any other colors that you would add to my look? I really wanted to do a pop of pink! You could also do a pop of blue, green, orange…maybe there isn’t any color that wouldn’t work!

Pop of Color Looks of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits –  ‘What’s better to wear for a color challenge than a “Colorblock Sweater”?  I added even more pop of color with a bright bag!”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “Adding a pop of color, shine, sparkle, feathers, faux fur, or an unexpected print is a simple way to breathe life to any outfit. Stop by the blog for simple tips on how to work with your existing wardrobe and break out of your Pandemic style rut.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “We rightly think a pop of color on a neutral background adds interest, drama and elevates an outfit.  Well today I’m the pop of color.  I just couldn’t resist a bright spring dress to blast us out of the doldrums!”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “I love lilac! But the color doesn’t look good on when it’s next to my face. This skirt was actually a bit to tight and I sold it. But the color and the fabric, it looked a bit like tweed, were fabulous. I like to wear lilac with purple, or with pink , or like here with orange. I am on the hunt for a new, or pre loved, lilac skirt! One that fits!”

Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits – “Like most of my Stylish Monday sisters, I LOVE color and am not ashamed to wear it, and just adding a pop of color to an otherwise neutral palette is a fun little trick to add to your repertoire if you’re not comfortable with wearing too much color. Pop on over to my blog for a peek at today’s outfit, and more style tips for adding pops of color to your wardrobe.”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “Seven months of snow means white and black everywhere. Occasionally, a hint of yellow. The sky is either dark with white pin dots and green stripes, gray with white polka dots, pink or orange, or steel blue (my favorite). Not much color. Thus, in the cold season you have hunger for color. So even though red adds a lot of weight (not actually, but it gives the illusion of being heavy), it’s one of my weapons to fight the winter blues.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “I adore bright colours, especially orange! Wearing bright orange always makes me feel happy, energetic and optimistic. I’m a big believer in colour therapy!”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “Green is my forever favorite color and the month of March really makes me want to wear all of the green things as I impatiently await the arrival of Spring. This outfit has a few more layers to beat the Winter chill and another print to create extra interest. Won’t you stop by to see more of this outfit and how it came to be!”

Ada – Elegance and Mommyhood – “Green is one of my favorite bright colors, especially Kelly Green. It’s also one of the most popular Pantone Colors of 2021. I wore this cute outfit today on a 47° sunny day (it felt warmer than that) and my beautiful daughter took these photos. I decided to pair this Kelly Green Eyelet Blouse by J. Crew with these Olive Green Skinny Jeans by Old Navy. Even my net socks are green (and black). They look great under the peep-toe booties.’

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles “My neon pink cardigan was thrifted, and are styled with Camo joggers. I  paired the outfit with a zebra print tote.”

Workout Wear

Great workout wear can make all the difference in your motivation to workout and to have an amazing workout! Similar to the importance of dressing everyday in what brings you joy, comfort and style, workout wear is not any different! When I plan a workout outfit that I’m excited to wear, I look forward to working out!

My set criteria for workout wear includes the following:

  • COMFORT is absolutely essential – high waisted leggings that hold me in, stay put and in place despite bending, stretching, etc. and must be cute!
  • CUTE – this of course has to be it’s own category/criteria because why would we wear anything that isn’t cute?!
  • SPORTS BRAS – must hold the girls high and tight, no jiggling, bouncing or cutting in/pinching
  • TENNIS SHOES – must support my feet and keep them comfortable (I should mention that lately I’ve been doing everything in my bare feet. Aerial yoga is always done barefooted. Since my other workouts are currently virtual, I’ve been doing them in my bare feet.). Love my tennis shoes to match my workout wear.

I’ve tried many brands both expensive and inexpensive. Here are my top three picks that meet my criteria consistently without disappointment! I can purchase these without the need to try them on!

Zyia Active Wear

You might recall that I did a whole blog post about Zyia Active Wear. You can read that post HERE.

When I put the sports bra on, I was pleased that it did exactly what I’d hoped for…held me high and tight! Not much jiggle or bounce! Phew! Additionally, it remains comfortable throughout all of my workouts! I can honestly say it’s the first workout bra that I liked and am comfortable wearing! Yay!!! Until getting the Zyia sports bra my hunt for the perfect sports bra had been unsuccessful!

The Zyia leggings also meet all of my criteria…comfort and cute! The Zyia leggings are high waisted, stay in place, are comfortable and have pockets! Both the leggings and the sports bra hold me nicely in place while maintaining comfort throughout entire workouts! In the picture above, you can see that I’ve layered a t-shirt over my sleeveless Zyia tank and I’m wearing my sports bra under the tank. Layers are always my workout wear go to and more often than not I’m in t-shirts.

Jessica Farr

By the way, Zyia wear comes in all sizes, women, children and men. If you’re interested in knowing more about the brand or placing an order, Jessica is your girl! She can help you out by answering your questions, placing orders, etc.! Click HERE!

Calvin Klein

CALVIN KLEIN Sportswear Macy’s Fox Valley Mall

The first time I purchased a pair of Calvin Klein leggings and matching t-shirt it was because I liked the pattern and the colors! I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you! That’s always my starting point…is it cute? Is it fun? Truthfully, I didn’t have a lot of confidence that it would meet all of my criteria but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it in fact does and is in my top three choices for workout wear!

Additionally, I like that I can often get a matching sweatshirt, add some jewelry and look good enough to be out and about running errands or for just lounging around. Since these leggings are colorful and patterned, I think you could add a tunic or top, some heels or booties and wear them for other events and activities!

Maize always wants to join in and loves laying on my yoga mat! Rip Stix for my Pound Fit workout!

Here’s another example of a pair of my Calvin Klein leggings – fun design, fun colors! As previously stated, I prefer to wear a sports bra and t-shirt when working out. I tend to plan my workout outfits like I do my everyday outfits especially since my Pound Fit and Pom Squad Fit classes often have holiday themes and active wear that goes with each workout, which I’ll elaborate on next.

SHOP CALVIN KLEIN WORKOUT WEAR

Old Navy

In my opinion, Old Navy has amazing leggings that meet my criteria and go beyond! The leggings are true work horses! I felt so proud and excited the first time I wore leggings because I had no confidence prior to losing my weight. I would have never set foot in a gym or anywhere else for that matter in a pair of leggings. The first time I wore these I recall my husband being shocked and saying, “You don’t wear leggings.” My reply, “I do now!” These pictures not only chronicle my first leggings but also my first trip to the gym and the start of my fitness journey!

January 2019

I didn’t have a clue as to what type of leggings I would like and didn’t want to spend a lot while trying to figure it out so I started at Old Navy! Success! These leggings appealed to me because of the design and the side stripes with a silver shimmery sparkly stripe! Two years later and I’m still wearing these exact leggings. That in and of itself says a lot! They run true to size and often come in fun colors and patterns!

As you can see, I always match a t-shirt with my leggings and I’m usually in layers especially since we do many inversions in aerial yoga. I don’t want to have a wardrobe mishap! LOL. Comfort and being able to move with ease are essential. There’s nothing worse that tugging and pulling and rearranging your workout wear.

Old Navy carries several different styles. My favorite is the high waisted elevate 7/8 length. They run true to size. I also like the compression leggings. Both styles hold me in nicely and stay up – no rolling over or sliding down! Old Navy has great sales. There are true winners in my book!

T-Shirts: Amazon
Leggings: K-DEER
I recently won a contest sponsored by Pom Squad Fit and got to pick my prize! I can’t wait to receive this t-shirt. Now I need some leggings with purple stripes!

There are other brands that I own but it’s been trial and error. Several I like because they fit with the branding of Pound Fit. K Deer is typically what you’ll see the Pound Pros wearing! Additionally, I wanted Pound t-shirts that matched. I often wear band tees that match my leggings because Pound is all about a “Rockout Workout”!

Halloween Themed Pom Squad Fitness

Life is short! Have fun! When Leah announces that our virtual workouts are themed, I’m all about dressing up and even working out being dressed up…these weren’t the most comfortable leggings but weren’t to bad either.

These leggings are Calvin Klein and match all of my criteria also in my top three picks! You can see that this was a Christmas themed workout.

Gail’s Workout Wear Favorites

Leggings: Carbon 38

Several posts ago, I introduced you to my friend Gail. To read that post, click HERE.

“Just like with clothes the objective is not to spend too much unless I know that the pattern will make me happy a year from now.” Gail and I are very like minded! Being cute and comfortable doesn’t need to break the bank. We both love a good sale and rarely pay full price unless something is a must have!

Legging: Onzie

“I sweat profusely so the long sleeves I wear are for a purpose (to absorb sweat); and also as I have gotten older I don’t want to parade around in just a sports bra.”

Legging: Equilibrium Activewear (Love that this is owned by a mother/daughter duo!)

“I will occasionally wear a tank top but I know that I’m happier in fabulous leggings with a cropped long sleeve top.”

“As far as sneakers- I MUST have very cushioned ones.
I have been wearing some iteration of the same NIKE Air Max since they were created. The cushioning absorbs impact from jumping around. “(there’s a song in there…LOL – Jump up, jump up and get down by House of Pain immediately came to my mind!)

Workout Wear: LIVE MIAMI

“I’m also a bit of a diva and like to match sneakers to outfit.” YES! to that sister! A requirement for all fashion divas!

“Just like with clothes- I’m very critical of myself with workout clothes. I want to look my best!” Don’t we all! I second that!

Leggings: LIVEMIAMI

Gail sums it up perfectly: “In the end, the only goal of your wardrobe is to make yourself feel good. If a certain outfit makes you confident in your own skin, throw it on! That’s all that matters. Doesn’t matter if you’re 29, 39, 49, or 59 like me; fashion empowers us all. As Martha Beck said: “Although beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, the feeling of being beautiful exists solely in the mind of the beheld.”

Here’s to looking and feeling beautiful in everything you wear even your workout wear!

Fitness Journey and Update 2020 – 2021

Goals

Does mid-February seem like an odd time to discuss fitness goals? Most people make resolutions or set goals in January. Sadly by mid February, those are out the door. So now feels like a perfect time to discuss goals and recommit to yourself.

Recommit! Recommit! Recommit!

This was one of Lori’s recent Weight Watching Wednesday Update’s post: (you can catch these posts every Wednesday on our Facebook Page.) On average, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by the second week of February. Good habits, especially ones drastically different from typical lifestyles, are hard to get started and even harder to keep. Research shows that on average, it takes approximately 66 days for a habit to become automatic. So you are so close to making new habits. You just need a few weeks more.

So recommit to your goals whatever they are and don’t quit!

Never ever give up!

If you’ve been following along on my journey which started in January 2018, you know that through working the WW (Weight Watchers) FreeStyle program (Blue) I lost over 50 pounds by diet alone. I always say that I’m not proud of the fact that I only followed the plan and did not exercise while lossing my weight. For me, it felt like too much to try and tackle all at once. (You can read about my weight loss journey by clicking HERE. ) The next step in my journey was to become thin and fit. My goal has been and continues to be to try new fitness activities in order to discover those that not only provide a good workout but that are fun and something I can look forward to doing. I found both aerial yoga and Pound Fit. (You can read about aerial yoga HERE.)

Aerial Yoga Class at the Vaughn Center

(You can read about Pound Fit HERE.).

Pound Fit Class at the Vaughn Center along with my girlfriend Cathy and two fellow Weight Watchers Friends!

Group fitness classes that involve music and high energy surrounded by others and upbeat positive instructors is totally my jam! Goal Achieved! In addition, I went to the gym and did 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weight machines. Not my preferred workout but important none the less. At times it can feel scary and intimidating to get out there by yourself and try new things. When those feelings surfaced, I pushed through. Each and every time I encountered a welcoming and encouraging group of people! My age and lack of experience never entered my mind…well maybe briefly! I don’t ever let that hold me back. Remember my mantra: You’re never too old! It’s never too late!

Pandemic 2020

Almost a year ago next month, we were all directed to shelter in place for two weeks. During those two weeks, I happily sat on my couch and binge watched Netflix. I began to feel unproductive and out of sorts not having a daily routine and schedule. It was difficult to find the motivation to figure out how I was going to duplicate the workouts I love while my gym was closed. Walks were good but not enough. In addition, it was March and cold here in Illinois! UGH! How was I suppose to maintain my goal of trying new fitness activities? Where there’s a will there’s a way! I discovered that Pound Fit’s website offered classes for a monthly membership fee with the first month being free to trial it. I immediately went on line to order my own set of rip stix!

The minute my stix were delivered I hopped on line and did my first virtual class. It felt so good! However, something was still missing! I was thrilled to find Leah who offered classes virtually. (To read a blog post about Leah, click HERE.).

Leah

Taking a class although virtual actually felt more like a group class that I enjoy despite the fact that we’re all on Zoom.

You might be thinking that this isn’t something new for me with regards to fitness activities. However, it’s important in my journey to trying new things while keeping the old that I love with the added challenge of my gym being closed! Finding Leah went into my win column! Next up Zumba!

Zumba

Zumba was always going on simultaneously in the room next to my Pound Fit class at the gym. I liked the high energy music I would hear plus I love to dance. I knew that it was something I wanted to give a try. Yay for Leah! She was offering virtual Zumba classes plus I already knew that I like her instructing style. This was the perfect opportunity to try something new! I signed up and took several classes. It was nice trying it while at home since I didn’t have to worry about not doing it right and going in all the wrong directions! LOL While I enjoyed it, it didn’t feel as intense a workout as I was looking for; and I didn’t sign up for more classes. However, Leah announced that she became a certified Pom Squad Fitness Instructor! This former cheerleader/pom squad teammate was all for giving this form of exercise a try!

Pom Squad Fitness

Leah and I in a virtual Pom Squad Fitness Class

According to the Pom Squad Fitness website, “POMSQUAD™ is a super fun, immensely positive, high energy dance fitness class!   You’ll be shaking your poms while prancing, dancing, bending, and snapping to today’s hits and yesterday’s favorites.  Inclusive, encouraging, and easy to follow classes are designed to maximize caloric burn while strengthening and toning the body.  Featuring a variety of dance styles and unique choreography, there is something for every type of spirit leader in each and every class.”

After the first class, I was sold! It was soooooo much fun and a perfect fit for me! Plus I burn a crazy amount of calories, sweat buckets, laugh at myself and when all else fails I just keep moving and shaking my pom poms! As Leah says, “Just step touch it out!”

Over 520 calories burned!

Leah has worked really hard to build relationships and connections between all of us even though we’re remote and all over the world! I completely appreciate popping on line for our Zoom virtual classes and knowing the others. This completely fulfills my need to feel connected and bond with those in my class! In both Pound and Poms, we can request songs and offer suggestions.

By the way, if you’re interested in joining me in either Pound or Poms, you do not need rip stix or pom poms. In my opinion, they just make the experience more FUN! I’m all about the FUN!

Leah often has themed parties for the holidays and just for fun! This girl loves a good themed party and loves to dress up for said parties even it is just leggings and a tshirt! I’m sure you’re not surprised!

Aerial Yoga

Aerial yoga is really tough to duplicate while staying home because you need really high ceilings, which none of mine are high enough. Right around the start of spring a fellow WW member asked if I was aware that there was a class being offered outside in the trees! Woo Hoo!! I was on line immediately and signed myself up for four classes! I did an entire blog post on my instructor Holly. (To read that post, click HERE.)

Holly and I on her property where we do aerial yoga in the trees!

I’m considering this trying something new even though I had already been practicing aerial yoga. I had never done it outside in the trees! Several friends joined me over the spring, summer and fall moths! Such a treat to encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. My friend Cathy (friends since high school) continued with me outside all season.

My Friend Cathy and I

Then it got cold and yoga outside is no longer an option. However, Holly is now instructing at Soma Yoga Studio in Batavia. The hammocks/silks all hang at least six feet apart with no more than six people per class. Cathy and I continue to attend classes!

Goddess Pose
Shoulder Stand

When the weather gets nicer I will return to classes outside as the whole experience is amazing: sun shining on you, birds singing, smell of the evergreens, fresh air…it’s a whole sensory pleasure! While doing aerial yoga wasn’t completely new for me, doing aerial yoga outside in trees was new!

If you’re local and interested in either aerial yoga at Soma or in the trees when it get’s nicer let me know.

Hula Hoop Yoga

Full disclosure, I only tried hula hoop yoga once. I went outside in my backyard to take the virtual class. My internet was sketchy outside so I went back inside. My ceilings aren’t tall enough when I fully extended my hula hoop. Despite these challenges I really liked the class. The reason I only did the class once was that it was being conducted the same time as my Pound Fit class. I would definitely try this class again although I think it would be necessary to be outside so it will have to wait until it’s warmer out again. I’m a huge fan of yoga and thoroughly enjoy trying the variations.

Goal Achieved

Despite the pandemic, I managed to find virtual Pound Fit classes. I tried Zumba and Pom Squad Fitness. I managed to find aerial yoga outside in trees. I tried Hula Hoop Yoga. Therefore, I tried three new to me fitness classes and found ways to continue with my current fitness fun classes – Pound Fit and Aerial Yoga! I’ve added Pom Squad Fitness to my weekly routine. I’ve kept my goal the same for this year. The plan is to continue to try new fitness activities. I’d really like to try a boxing class especially since my friend Gail is so passionate about it. (To read about Gail, click HERE.)

Stay At Home Date Night

10 Date Ideas for Staying In

  1. Cook a special or fancy dinner together. Most of you know that I don’t cook or bake but I am a good helper and take directions well. I would have to play the role of sous chef.
  2. Eat takeout by candlelight. I burn a candle almost every night but to make it special it would be fun to light many candles or themed colors to go with a themed take out. Add a bouquet of fresh flowers. I love having fresh flower bouquets throughout the year.
  3. Have a picnic on the floor. We have a eating only in the kitchen area rule but this would be a fun twist.
  4. Make a new drink and use your fancy glasses! This can be alcoholic or non alcoholic beverages.
  5. Stargaze from your backyard. If you don’t live in the heart of a city, you might be able to see a good number of stars in the sky. Right now we might run outside and look especially when we’re aware that there’s something extra special happening in the sky like a blood moon, etc. but when it’s too cold, we actually look through our sky lights or just out the windows. Mr. FTF actually has an app on his phone that helps us locate constellations, etc.
  6. Play board games. Mr. FTF is not much of a game player. On occasion, I can get him to play cards. He will work on puzzles with me while we listen to music.
  7. Get dessert to go from your favorite restaurant. How about desert for dinner?! I’m always watching my points (Weight Watchers) but there are low calorie great deserts that can be bought or made. I simply plan ahead and save my points.
  8. Movie night at home. Mr. FTF and I are big fans of going to the movies. Since the theaters have been closed, we’ve watched new movies on TV and made big bowls of popcorn (my favorite). We recently watched the new Tom Hanks movie News of the World. You could go to the dollar store and get some special “movie” type snacks.
  9. Take a trip down memory lane. Get out old photos or family home movies, and spend some time reminiscing.
  10. Make milkshakes, floats or fancy ice cream sundaes at home.  Get your favorite flavor of ice cream and an assortment of toppings.
Yay for Panera Flatbread Pizza and Netflix!

Mr. FTF and I are pretty boring or “generic” when it comes to date night at home. We’re actually really happy with just the simple things. When we found out that Panera brought back their flatbread pizza, we were thrilled. Finding a good series to binge watch on Netflix makes us happy. Sharing a big bowl of popcorn while watching a movie on the couch together brings us joy. We love to laugh and goof around with each other! Recently, we became puppy parents so that has been all consuming but LOTS of FUN!

This is Maize our Lab puppy!

What I’d Wear for a Date Night at Home – Valentine’s Looks

Sweater and Joggers: New York and Company
Sparkle Earring and Cuff: LDWatkins Designs
Boots: DSW White Mountain

In all honesty, I’m a sweat pants and sweatshirt kind of gal when just relaxing at home. Since leisure wear is all the rage, this is the perfect Valentine date night at home lounge wear set: cute, comfy and put together looking! The joggers are high waisted and have pockets. The top is a lightweight sweater. The boots are fleece lined and nice and warm.

Love Sweater: Loft
Red Velvet Pants: My Closet (Macy’s)
White Boots: My Closet (Glik’s)
Glitter Heart Earrings and Cuff: LDWatkins Designs
Even Maize has her Valentine’s scarf on for the photo!

Loft has the cutest sweaters for Valentine’s Day; or they can be worn for any time of the year because why not spread all the LOVE we can! This love sweater is fun because of the way the letters are spread out over the sleeve along with the small heart in the lower corner. I liked that it’s gray. Any reason to wear my velvet red pants makes me happy.

Heart Sweater: Loft
Pink Velvet Pants: My Closet (Macy’s)
White Boots: Amazon

I ordered this sweater from Loft the same time I ordered the LOVE sweater. Dressing for the holidays brings me joy! The orange and pink hearts are a fun mix of colors. How cute is the heart in the back?! These pink velvet pants are the same as my red and make me so happy anytime that I can wear them! Both of these looks would be great for a date night at home; or for going out if that’s an option where you live.

Sequin Lips T-shirt: New York and Company
Glitter Earrings and Cuff: LDWatkins Designs
Tweed Jacket: My Closet (New York and Company)
Faux Leather Joggers: My Closet (Express)
Red Boots: My Closet

Graphic t-shirts are fun, easy to style and so comfortable. To see a previous blog post on styling graphic t-shirts, click HERE and HERE. These leather joggers are like wearing sweatpants. They’re big on comfort, style and pair well with almost every kind of top! I tried on several jackets, blazers and a cardi for this look all of which looked good. This jacket is trimmed with faux leather. It’s actually too big on me but I decided that it was good for an oversized look! I was going to donate it but it’s back hanging in my closet!

Lips Tunic: New York and Company
Bralette: Flair on Third
Red Glitter Earrings and Cuff: LDWatkins Designs
Faux Leather Leggings: Amazon
Red Boots: My Closet

This Valentine’s look is a nod to the 1990’s Paula Abdul era “Blowin Kisses in the Wind” (circa 1993). All I would need to replicate an early ’90’s look is stirrup pants and big hair…all of which I wore! This dress/tunic is very comfortable and figure flattering since it’s not clingy. The lips are metallic and rather shimmery!

Tie Die Pink and Red Top with Rhinestones and Statement Sleeves: Macy’s
Distressed Jeans: My Closet (Express)
Red Boots: My Closet

It’s pretty obvious why I love this top so much: pink and red tie dye, statement sleeves and rhinestones! To read a previous blog post on the tie dye trend, click HERE. All of my favorites in one fabulous top and it’s super comfy. While it’s perfect for Valentine’s Day! It’s also a great choice for spring!

Stay at Home Date Night Looks of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits –   “A date night outfit to wear at home has to be comfortable and cozy, yet pretty and romantic at the same time.  This black floral kimono was a gift to me from my husband.  I love to wear it on our home date nights with a romantic camisole.  I completed the “Comfy  & Cozy” requirement with a pair of soft joggers.”

Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits – “The hubs and I enjoy date nights at home every Sunday night, and they rock for me, because he usually does all the cooking! He also mixes up one heck of a cocktail. I found this beautiful rose top at Target, and styled it with my favorite jeans and booties, added my Mom’s pearl necklace and felt super fancy! Pop on over for all the deets on my outfit, and that cocktail recipe you are NOT going to want to miss!”

Emma – The Style Splash – “We don’t usually go out for Valentine’s Day – and we certainly won’t be this year – but I welcome the excuse to wear red! The rainbow striped sweater with the word “amour” on it (French for love, of course) seems very appropriate.”

Gwen – Gwen Lives Well and Instagram – GwenLivesWell – “I don’t know about you, but I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually been out on Valentine’s Eve. I mean, yes, when I was in my twenties with no kids, maybe I might have ventured out, but more often than not, home is where I wanted to be. Why deal with busy restaurants, cold food, harried servers when you can have a romantic Valentine’s date night at home? Sharing some suggestions for fab date nights at home, whether it’s Valentine’s Eve or not!”

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles “Wore this thrifted blue and white heart sweater to date night last weekend paired with my vintage Levi’s jeans and pop of red hand bag  and fun sneakers with red shoelaces.”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “For  A date night at home, I let Gerben choose his favorite outfit on me! Can it be anymore boring? In my eyes, I don’t even like black and white together. And although he said that I have a lot of beautiful dresses, he likes a black pencil skirt, a simple white blouse and classic pumps. A few simple golden jewelry and, and that is what he likes the most of course…..my black stockings! Oh men…..”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “Date night means dancing for us. Then a sleek fit-and-flare dress is a Must. This dress has too much cleavage for my taste, but works well for layering with a halftee underneath. In Interior Alaska, date night can also be early in the morning. In winter,  it’s dark until late in the morning (only 3.5 h of daylight at winter solstice. In summer, there is daylight 24/7 for 84 days. More on Alaska lifestyle on the blog.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “Wondering what to do for Valentines Day this year?  I’ve got you covered with a two part series!  Last Friday I created a whole post about what to do for Valentines Day 2021 and today I’m sharing some great outfits to go with a variety of possible dates!”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “This date night at home theme was announced just before my scheduled date night at home for our 11th wedding anniversary. While I had plans to dress up a bit for our special night, my hormones decided otherwise and slammed me with debilitating cramps all night long. And so I ended up spending our date night in my coziest things curled up on the couch! But if I had been able to dress up, I would have worn this comfy black velvet pant suit that is a recent thrift shop acquisition. I love the elastic waistband and wide legs of the pants making them feel more like pajamas than dress pants. I layered a cowl neck sweater under the velvet cardigan and slipped my cold tootsies into some furry line rose gold mules. A simple tassel necklace and earrings in gold and rose gold completed my look. All set for date night 2021-style!”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “Like many moms, I don’t remember the last time I went out on Valentines Day with just my husband. But, that doesn’t mean we don’t celebrate with a bottle of wine and usually steamed mussels for the 4 of us, and of course a yummy dessert! Jennafer Grace makes the most beautiful, old Hollywood style comfortable pieces  – like this 2-piece shimmer set – perfect for lounging in style at home. Today I’m sharing how I style a few of my Jennafer Grace favorites along with a recipe for my favorite cocktail..Cheers!”

Chic Sneak Peek

Chico’s New Collection February 2021 – Virtual Fashion Show

Chico’s Naperville, IL

Maggie, the store manager at the Chico’s in downtown Naperville, Illinois, and I decided to collaborate each month and bring you a “Chic Sneak Peek” featuring Chico’s new collection. It’s always so great working with Maggie and all of the sales associates. They’re all so friendly, helpful and able to assist you with styling!

Chico’s Team
Maggie, Marcia and Lynn

Maggie and the associates always have our fitting rooms ready and waiting for us – cleaned and socially distanced. She places a very generous thank you gift/Swag Bag in our individual rooms! The sales associates also had treats waiting for us!

I had the pleasure of sharing how I’d style some of Chico’s current collection along with Maggie of Maggiegstyles, and my Chicago Midlife Influencer Friends Linda of lglamor and Sue of FashionablyFifty

Soma Pop Up

Maggie sharing some of the Soma collection! In my opinion, Soma has the BEST underwear for comfort and no show! The vanishing tummy are my favorites!

This robe ensemble would be so cute for Valentine’s Day!

Chico’s New Collection

Look 1

The bright colors in this tweed jacket immediately drew my attention on the rack. Plus I might have a jacket, blazer, coat obsession – just ask my girlfriends! In my fashionable opinion, pink is a good choice all year long. Would you agree? The jacket has many beautiful colors allowing you to pair it with lots of other colors. This jacket can easily be dressed up or down. I shared it with pink dress pants that I would wear to work. Both items can be worn separately and can be worn almost all year long.

Look 2

There are countless ways to style this pink, blue and white cool-toned structured notched-collar cardigan! The detailing is also very eye catching. Similar to the tweed jacket, this cardigan can easily be worn with dress pants, jeans and even leggings. It’s a perfect layering piece and can easily be dressed up or down. This cardigan can be worn for most of the year! The length gives you good coverage.

As you can see, we’re all different heights and sizes and yet the cardigan would look on each of us!

Linda – lglamor (Instagram)

Linda shared how she would wear these adorable leggings and top to go out as well as work from home! This is part of Chico’s Zenergy line.

Sue of FashionablyFifty (Instagram)

Sue shared this red and white striped top that says follow your heart and the doted pants for a fun pattern mix! This top would be cute for Valentine’s Day and can be worn all year long. The chain is navy and silver and can be used as a necklace, or you can attach your face mask, or you can attach glasses. What a great and fashionable solution with many uses! Sue also shared some beautiful silver bangles.

The Must Have Sweater

The “IT” Sweater

Every fall/winter season there seems to be an “it” item! What do I mean by an “it” item you ask? When you can see a clothing item in square after square after square on Instagram, I call it the “it” item of the season. At times, I’m tempted to jump on the bandwagon but don’t. However, when I kept seeing this sweater and it looked cute on everyone wearing it (young and midlife and all body types) plus it looked so cute all the different ways it was styled, I had to jump on the bandwagon!

“It” Sweater and Leggings

Since the sweater is oversized and has good length like a tunic, it makes sense to style it with leggings! The sweater comes in 33 colors and patterns. I opted for the white (off white?) color since I felt it could be paired with anything on the bottom. Remember the styling tip: If it’s loose fitting on the top, wear something fitted on the bottom! I ordered my usual size; but you can see I could have probably gone down a size. This first picture is not the most flattering but I wanted to share it in order for you to get a sense of the oversized fit. By the way, it’s super soft! It can be washed and dried. This whole look is so comfortable. In fact, I’d put it up there with wearing leisure wear!

(I promise my Christmas decorations have been long down! Clearly I took these pictures during the holiday season!)

“It” Sweater and Dress Pants

Since I ordered the sweater around the holiday, I opted to pair it with some red dress pants and my plaid booties. I could swap out this jewelry and add some heart accessories for a Valentine’s Day Vibe! Truly the options are endless! This picture shows the length in the back…good booty coverage! That’s probably why I’d keep my regular size instead of going down a size. I’m 5’8 for your reference and wearing a medium!

“It” Sweater and Jeans

The “It” sweater pairs well with any slim fitting jeans. I opted to wear my jeans with the side stripes in sequins, rhinestone belt and add my silver pumps. This is also a great holiday look, weekend date night look and party vibe! As you can see, I opted for a slight front tuck to give me some more definition in the middle. Plus I wanted this amazing rhinestone belt to shine and be seen!

Any print pants would match this sweater and that’s one reason it’s so great! I opted to pair it with my leopard pants and add my Steve Madden sneakers with gold and leopard side stripes. Sneakers aren’t always my go to as I tend to prefer some type of heel but I think this look turned out pretty cute and of course very comfortable.

In all seriousness, I could have kept going and who knows how many outfits I could continue to create! Do you have a favorite?

The “It” Sweater was sitting in my Amazon cart waiting for me to pull the trigger when I read a Facebook post written by my friend Suzanne. (You know her from Stylish Mondays.) She was commenting on how great the sweater is and I chimed in that I was thinking of ordering it. Then Andy added comments that it was also in her cart. (You also know Andy from Stylish Mondays.) We each ordered different colors and put our spin on styling this year’s “It Sweater”.
