Stylish Monday and Link Up Party – September 2021

Weekend Wear

The second Monday of each month I participate in a collaboration with fabulously fashionable women from around the world. We pick a different theme each month. Then we interpret that theme with our own sense of style. I’m always excited to see how each puts her spin on the theme and hope you are as well!

Weekend wear was an easy theme as there are so many options! Truly what I end up wearing is completely dependent on where I’m going and what we’re going to be doing. Therefore; the range is pretty vast in what you might find me wearing. You know that I love to be fancy and that does include the weekends although if we’re staying home or just catching a movie you’ll find me in a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants and a sweatshirt depending on our Illinois weather.

Saturday Date Night

Recently when Mr. FTF and I went out to dinner and to watch a band. I wore this outfit. White jeans, a tie dye ruffled sleeve top, silk sash used as a belt and hot pink slides comprised my date night look although I also wore this exact outfit to work.

Ruffled Sleeve Top: Calvin Klein Macy’s
INC Boyfriend Jeans: Macys
Hot Pink Slides: My Closet

I love to wear my colored contacts on the weekends for a change in my look! I think Mr. FTF likes it too! These are sterling gray (nonprescription) and were a gift to me from Oxie Affordable Optical. To read the blog post, click HERE.

Cheers to Us! I enjoyed my favorite lemon drop martini – no sugar!
We saw the band Circle of Fifths. Bob is pictured in the center and was a former band member in Mr. FTF’s band.

Weekend Date Night Look 2

My son-in-law is in a band and plays out regularly. We recently went to see him play at a local establishment. Prior we met with his parents for dinner. My look that evening was this fitted lace top, which was a bold move for me as it’s relatively sheer and side striped jeans. Since the band plays mainly country music and the bar is country and western, I elected to wear my white boots. I need to find a fabulous pair of white cowboy boots especially since western wear is super trendy right now.

Mr. FTF likes to be silly and strike a pose like me…even though I’m not so good at striking a pose! LOL

Mr. FTF’s shirt was a gift from my girl’s trip to California. To read that blog, click HERE. The back is so much more fun than the front. Would you agree?

We had a fantastic dinner at a Greek restaurant called Basils prior to seeing the band! I’m not a foodie person and don’t usually take pictures of my meals but this feta watermelon salad was so delicious! I’m thinking it will be great for my girl’s pool side chat next summer…of course Mr. FTF will be making it!

Southern Draw Chicago – My son-in-law is the drummer!

Weekend Summer Fests and More Music

Throwback Fest is a Chicago neighborhood fest that we enjoy attending and I’m sure you can figure out why – the music. We love hearing bands and live music. My son-in-law’s band also plays this fest so we attended with our family and friends. Last year it was canceled due to Covid so it was great to be able to go this year. My fest outfit was this Rolling Stones red, white and blue t-shirt and the star and stripe shorts paired with my star tennis shoes.

Weekend Date Night at the Movies

Mr. FTF and I are big fans of going to the movies! I usually stay pretty casual…my girlfriends and I call it “casually cute”. Many times we go out to dinner first and then the show. We missed when the theaters were closed. So happy that many reopened although our favorite theater didn’t survive the pandemic. These camo joggers are super stretchy and comfy. I love the side stripe and blue color. They are from On Deck, a clothing store in Door County, Wisc. The top is a t-shirt material with sequin shoulder stripes – making this look “casual cute”!

Sequin Striped Top: Macy’s
Blue Camo Joggers: On Deck
Madden Girl Slides

We always share a popcorn! Popcorn is my weakness; and even though I know it’s not good for me I splurge every time we go to the movies! If I was left to fend for myself, popcorn would be a frequent meal choice LOL!

Weekend Lunch Date with Girlfriends

I have a wonderful group of friends that I met through my Scleroderma support group. To see a previous post about my autoimmune disease, click HERE. We recently got together for a lunch date and to catch up with each other. We hadn’t seen each other in person since the pandemic started. This taffeta statement sleeve crew neck top has been a favorite of mine all summer! I have it in white and black. It comes in five colors! The striped shorts have been in my wardrobe for about six years. I originally got them for a Disney Family Cruise. Unfortunately, I did not get any pictures of us because we were busy catching up. It sure was great seeing them in person again!

Weekend Fashions of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – “Weekends are all about church, family, and friends for me.  This is an outfit I wore both to church in the morning and then later in the evening for an outdoor dining experience with my family in the hills of Buffalo County.”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “When the weekend comes, I like to throw on a comfortable easy outfit that can take me from running errands to watching the kids events – all in one. If it’s hot, I’ll always opt for a relaxed fitting maxi dress. Otherwise it’s jeans or joggers like this pair by Electric Rose, paired with a tank, and ALWAYS a long cardigan. A weekend wardrobe essential (bonus for pockets!); I’m styling up long cardigans multiple ways, in today’s Style Post.”

Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits “Since I have to dress up and show up for work during the week, the  weekend is my time to dress down and stay comfy, which usually means a casual dress and sneakers for running my errands and puttering around the house. Comfort is key!”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “On weekends, I change my outfit several times a day. After breakfast in PJ and taking a shower, I put my old blue jeans on with a Tee, scarf or vest, to mow the lawn with a push mower or do some yard work. Then I change into a dress and sandals for shopping and running errands. In winter, shoveling the driveway, ice picking, and add a down coat and pom pom hat with gloves.  For shopping, tall boots and tights plus a down coat or shearling with matching scarf, gloves and hat. However, when going out for dancing on a weekend I wear one of my dance dresses like this velvet beauty.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “Comfort is key when it comes to weekend dressing for me. These loose-fitting trousers have an elasticated waistband so are super comfy, but it still looks like I’ve made the effort thanks to the leopard print. I live in trainers or flat sandals at weekends as I’m often shopping and running errands.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “My weekend wardrobe doesn’t differ much from my weekday wardrobe but I do opt for comfort above all things on the weekends. A fun tee shirt dress, sneakers, and a baseball cap is an easy combination for most of my weekend activities.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “Everything you need to know about having a wonderful fall weekend–what to wear, what to do and a great recipe to enjoy.”

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com   “I don’t really have a particular look for weekends…except that whatever I decide to wear must have some sort of fun or pizzazz to it.  Dressing sets my mood- and I definitely need me some good dopamine styling! So here I am in my favourite jeans…the sparkle does it all for lighting me up whether it’s doing the regular Saturday runs, meeting up with a friend, or even a date night.  This weekend leisure look is for running errands!”

Joy –   Joyous Styling    https://joymaxbolick.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/weekend-wear/

“A fun weekend look….Florals are coming in strong for Fall! This blouse is so fabulous for $14.00! It can be worn casual or for business! I love it with my gold belt, and red denim jeans.”

Why You Should Take a Girl’s Vacation

Part 1 – Palm Springs, California

Research supports that taking a trip with your friends can actually improve your mental health and long-term happiness. We know that maintaining mental soundness is more important, and more challenging, than ever. So ladies, gather your best buds, pack your bags, and get away — for your sanity’s sake.

Research conducted at Michigan State University in 2017 reinforced the importance of maintaining long-term friendships, which I’m blessed to have many! I’ve been friends with these girls for 46 years; and Deb and I span 55 years of friendship! In a pair of studies involving almost 280,000 people, researcher William Chopik found that friendships become an even more important predictor of happiness and health as we get older, even outpacing the importance of relationships with family members. The research concluded that friendships predict both day-to-day happiness and how long we’ll live more than both spousal and family relationships.

I hadn’t flown since March 2020. Originally got this t-shirt for spring break 2020, which got canceled!

Turning 60 is kind of a big deal absolutely worthy of being celebrated all year long! (To see a previous post on my thoughts about turning 60 and why you should do a photoshoot for any aged birthday, CLICK HERE. ) Since all of my dear friends and I turn/ed 60 this year, we’ve been talking about and planning our celebrations, which included two trips this summer to celebrate. This first celebratory trip I took was with my grade school and high school girl friends to Palm Springs, California. Deb, Cindy, Kate and I had a wonderful week of celebrating together! Here are our pictures from senior year in high school 1979. Deb and I have been friends since we were five years old. I met Cindy and Kate in high school as freshman. We’ve had many years of fun, laughter and love together. We’ve been by each other’s sides through the happy times and supported each other in sad times. Mostly we’ve simply had a lot of fun, adventures and a long standing cherished friendships! These girls are like the sisters I never had but wanted…I always love our time together!

LaQuinta Luxury Leasing

We were able to stay at Deb’s family home in LaQuinta. They do rent it out if you’re interested in staying for a vacation – click here! It’s absolutely gorgeous inside and out. The views are breath taking! The house is located on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Golf Course and views the Santa Rosa Mountains. We went in June and the average temperature was about 117 – 120! Super hot but who cares when you can float in the pool all day! We each had our own bedroom and bathroom. Kate stayed in the Casita. If you follow me on Instagram, I gave a little tour of the whole house in my stories.

Here’s the description from the rental listing:

“Escape to PGA West, a Tuscan-inspired luxury home on the Jack Nicklaus Tournament golf course in La Quinta. This one-of-a-kind home overlooks the 13th Fairway of the Nicklaus Tournament Course, this home exudes luxury and charm. Featuring 4 beds, 4.5 baths plus Casita 4132 Sq Ft. Daily Activities

We typically started out our day with a walk in the morning. We tried to get out early enough so that we didn’t completely melt. Kate was a great navagator as I am horrible with directions and always get myself turned around. She kept us moving in the right direction and in as much shade as possible. I loved our walks, talks, looking at the neighborhoods, the beautiful landscape and mountain views. It was a perfect way to start our days!

After our long walks and talks, we’d come back to the house grab some breakfast and hop in the pool! Much of our time was spent floating, laughing, more talking, and simply chilling out! It was so nice to slow down and just be present with each other. Such a gift! I was thrilled that we discovered a golden swan and glittery inner tubes in the garage because it made pool floating all the more fun! Of course, it was necessary one day to wear our 60 glasses and tiaras in the pool! I might have packed five swimsuits. I’m sure you’re not surprised! My new favorite is the hot pink deep v lace up suit!

A few mornings, we spent pouring over our senior yearbook, reminiscing and laughing!

Shopping & Sight Seeing

My gal pals were nice enough to go shopping with me. It’s probably more my thing than theirs. Downtown Palm Springs has some great shops! It was hotter than Hades the day we went. Even I felt like I was totally going to melt despite the fact that I love the heat!

If you want to stay in the Palm Springs area, The Gardens on El Paseo and the Shops on El Paseo are two neighboring shopping districts with high-end names like Kate Spades, Escada and Saks Fifth Avenue.

A stroll through downtown Palm Springs is a must for any trip to the desert. The downtown area is a shopping mecca for anyone who loves art, boutique clothing stores and all things modern. Spend a day looking for antique treasures at thrift stores or antique shops, or get the perfect resort outfit for your Palm Springs retreat at one of the designer boutiques on Palm Canyon Drive. Cindy really wanted to hit these stores but it was just too hot and we really didn’t need anything but the looking sure is fun! You’ll also find specialty items like cigars, music boxes, collectable coins and healing stones. Some of Palm Springs best restaurants can be found downtown, which is why it’s a must-visit for anyone visiting Palm Springs.

Pre-Shopping Photo

We also had fun driving around looking at the mid-century architecture. There might have been a lot of singing in the car to tunes from our high school days – think Diana Ross (one of our favorites), The Cars, Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Aerosmith, etc. It was fun to envision movie stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin etc. walking about and living there. I was super excited to see the controversial Marilyn Monroe statue. Apparently, many are offended by the fact that you can see her white panties, which in my opinion cover far more than what you can see at the beach on any given day. The statue was roped off so we had to view her from a distance.

Jumpsuit: Cali and Chance
Loved these colorful planters and picnic tables so had to have a picture of course!

We attempted to drive up to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Deb has taken the tram before and it made her motion sick, which I can totally relate to so we thought we’d tour and drive on our own. Cindy swears that the Flintstones Cartoon is set in Palm Springs. Our Google search did not confirm this! LOL

Dining

We went out to dinner every night except one night we stayed in and grilled dinner. Our first night we were pretty exhausted from our travels. Cindy and I flew from Chicago to LAX. Deb picked us up and we drove to Palm Springs Airport to pick up Kate. Luckily, Deb had the perfect lunch in mermaid boxes along with a cooler of drinks waiting for Cindy and I in the car, which held us over until dinner! Deb is always so thoughtful!

Heirloom Craft Kitchen

By the time we got into town, we were all tired and starving! We found a restaurant that was still opened and ate at Heirloom Craft Kitchen. Their “casual dining concept features delicious scratch made soups, salads, small plates, sandwiches and signature dishes featuring local and organic produce. The “craft” in our names stands for quality, sustainability and above all else flavor.”

Las Casuelas Nuevas

The next night we opted for a Mexican dinner; and ate at Las Casuelas Nuevas. “Las Casuelas Nuevas is a local culinary institution and a staple of Restaurant Row that has stood the test of time serving great Mexican food in the Coachella Valley for over 40 years.” I wish I would have taken more pictures of the restaurant as it had a very fun vibe both inside and outside!

Salsa, Guacamole, Chips and Drinks to get us started! I could have made this my meal!

Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa Rancho Mirage

We got decked out in our 60th Birthday Finery and headed out to the Agua Caliente Resort Casino! We were totally ready to hit it big on our 60th Birthday Bash! We did hit it big in terms of having FUN! Not so much in the gambling!

Deb’s favorite – Wheel of Fortune
Cindy: Biggest Loser
Deb: Biggest Winner

This nice guy and his wife offered to take our pictures while at the casino. We didn’t even have to ask him, which I thought was so nice. It was pretty obvious that we were celebrating. When he handed my phone back to me, he told me there might be a surprise picture and here it is…he took his own selfie! We had a good laugh and I loved that he did this…his wife said he does it all the time!

Tommy Bahamas

We went to Tommy Bahamas for a late lunch early dinner on our shopping day! We loved the food and drinks so much that we decided to go back a second time for dinner. The Key Lime Martinis are EXCELLENT! That might have played a key role in us returning! This might have been the trip of the martinis! I think I convinced Kate that martinis are super tasty…Lemon Drop, Key Lime and Chocolate!

I’m not really a foodie and don’t usually take pictures of my meals but this was so good I just had to take a picture!

The night we went back for dinner we shared this birthday cake. They didn’t sing to us but we sang to ourselves! Then we shared this cake!

It was a night of chocolate! Kate and I shared a chocolate martini!

Dinner at Home

When we were in college and would come home for the summers, we’d often go out drinking (don’t tell our parents)! We’d come home after the bars closed and go to Deb’s house for some Miller Meat Pack burgers on the grill! Deb’s dad owned the meat packing company and I’ve never had a better burger ever!!! Deb told the story of how her mom would go to cook burgers for her family of nine and there wouldn’t be any. She’d yell at Mr. Miller to bring home a box to which he’d reply that he just did…ooops we ate them all! LOL

Working the grill was quit a project to which I’m little to no help!

Kate and Cindy man the grill!

Our drink of choice was Tanqueray and Tonic in our matching Friends classes that Deb got all of us! Tanqueray is also symbolic for us as we often drank G and Ts because it’s what our parents seemed to have on hand. How did they not notice we were drinking up all of their bottles?! We had some exciting games of Mexican Train, which Cindy taught all of us! We didn’t dance on any tables this time but that’s a story for another time!

We dubbed ourselves “The Packettes” in our younger years with Deb being the lead Packette. We often went to the MIller Meat Packing Baseball games to cheer on the guys! Deb still has the visor.

Packettes Summer 1980 (Then)
Packettes Summer 2021 (Now)
Deb set this up on the bar in the house…all representative of us and some of our adventures!

Our Last Day Together

We had to pack up and take Kate back to the airport first. Then Deb, Cindy and I drove up to Malibu. It was a bit sad saying good-bye to Kate. I was excited to go to Malibu and to be able to see Deb’s family that live in the area.

Peace out LaQuinta

I could sit on Deb’s deck for hours and look at her beautiful view!

The week seemed to go by so quickly! We had an absolute blast together getting caught up with each other, reminiscing, laughing, eating, drinking and simply relaxing! A girl’s vacation is good for the soul! I highly recommend you consider enjoy a special birthday or any birthday with your gal pals on a get away!

Hope you come back next week for Part 2 of Why You Should Take a Girl’s Birthday Vacation! I’ll be sharing my college girlfriend’s 60th birthday vacation! Yes! I got to have not one but two gal pal trips!

Been There! Done That! Got the T-Shirt!

Had to have the souvenir t-shirt! The colors, the design, the martini glasses definitely cinched it for me! The vibe is mid-century exactly like much of the Palm Springs architecture. My trip might be over but I’ve got my memories and my t-shirt! Do you like to get a tee from your vacation?

Sunglasses are Great Accessories – Oxie Affordable Optical

Oxie Affordable Optical
131 W Galena Blvd, Aurora, IL 60506
(630) 692-9220

Twenty years ago for my 40th birthday one of my gifts was Lasik Eye Surgery to correct my near-sided vision. Prior to that I had worn glasses and contacts since the fourth grade. Getting my vision corrected was one of the best things I could have done for myself! At the time, they did forewarn me that my vision could change as I age; and I might end up needing readers. At that time, we didn’t spend near the time we do now on computers. Currently, I have a need for both. And don’t we all have a need for sunglasses whether they’re prescription or simply for fun?! They might as well be cute and act as an accessory to our outfits!

Meet Mia of Oxie Affordable Optical

Mia and her husband Ken opened their doors in downtown Aurora a little over 5 years ago. Since day one, she and her staff have strived to provide professional and friendly optical care at an affordable price.

Mia

Mia and I originally met when I escorted my mom to help her pick out glasses. Picking out glasses can be a really big deal especially if you need to wear them daily. Similar to myself, my mom wanted a cute pair that would compliment her face and coloring and look good with most outfits. Mia is one of those people that when you meet her you immediately like her! She was super friendly, helpful, patient and knowledgeable. Plus look how cute and stylish she is … an immediate connection! The next time I would connect with Mia was at a fundraiser that we both attended; and my husband’s band was playing at. A couple of years ago I needed to spend some of my Flex Money before the end of they year. I hadn’t had my eyes checked in some time so I decided to see if they had changed and if I had a need for glasses. I decided to support local women owned business and thought of Mia and Oxie Affordable Optical. Mia helped me pick out computer prescription glasses and some glasses for driving. I had so much fun with her looking at frames and making my decisions. I ended up picking out Guess for both pairs. The frame style and how they looked on me was more important than the brand.

These are my driving glasses. Mia encouraged me to wear them when we go to the movies. Now that we’ve been able to do that again, I need to remember to take them with me! I have a tendency to lean towards bigger statement frames. I feel as though my overall face shape and my head size (which I think is large) can handle it!

These are my computer/reading glasses. They’ve made such a difference as I spend a great deal of time both on my computer and reading! I don’t mind needing them as you know I thinking getting old is a gift. (To see my previous post on my thought on turning 60, CLICK HERE.) Additionally, I think of them as an added accessory. You know my feelings about accessories: They elevate an outfit and complete the look!

60TH Birthday Gift

When Ashley, social media manager at Oxie, reached out to tell me that they wanted to gift me a pair of sunglasses for my 60th birthday and asked if I’d be interested in doing a collaboration with them, I was thrilled and happy to participate! Who doesn’t love love celebrating their birthday, birthday gifts and a great pair of sunglasses? I don’t know about you but I have so many pairs and colors to match my swimsuits and just my everyday outfits! I consider sunglasses accessories and like them to compliment my look. Similar to clothing trends there are also sunglasses trends. Updating your sunglasses can be a super easy way to update your look. However, there are also some classic sunglass styles that stand the test of time and are must haves for your collection. Do you have a favorite pair that you always reach for? My favorite classic pair is by Ray Ban and they’re aviator style.

Mia had pulled several pair of sunglasses for my appointment, which I was so appreciative of because there are so many choices even for me (I consider myself very decisive!) it can be overwhelming. Mia helps to simplify the process! I have an oval shaped face and as previously mentioned can wear larger frames and pretty much any shape. I started out trying on about ten pairs of varying sizes, designers, styles and colors. Hope you watch this brief video of the try on process!

So many choices to choose from, therefore, I was grateful for MIa’s expert assistance!
Coach Sunglasses
Ray Ban…Getting my Hippie Groove On
I had so much fun with Mia!

Initially, there were ten pairs in the running! Yes, you read that right – ten pairs and so many great options! With Mia’s help and advice, I was able to narrow my choices down to four. Then I did another try on in order to make my final decision. Have you figured out which pair I decided on in the end?

Final Decision

I have got to tell you that I consider myself a very decisive person. I usually know what I like and what suits me right away. I think because there were so many great choices I was really struggling to pick “the pair”! In the end, I choose the Ray Bans because I like the thick frames and style of them. I think they will be classics for a long time to come. I already have an aviator pair of Ray Bans that I love! The color and style will go with so many outfits. Did you make the right guess? Did my choice surprise you at all?

More Birthday Gifts

Getting a new pair of Ray Bans totally made my day so you can image my surprise and thrill when Mia gifted me a pair of round glasses and two pairs of gray colored contacts. The round frames from my try on were also in my top pick when I was trying to narrow down my decision. If you follow me on IG and watch my stories, you know that I was obsessed with the filter that changes your eye color. I loved how fun my eyes looked gray! I joking mentioned to Mr. FTF that I was going to get myself some colored contacts. He laughed but I’m sure wasn’t surprised. Did you know you don’t need a prescription to get colored contacts? I don’t wear them everyday but have been enjoying wearing them for date nights, girl friend get togethers and other special occasions. If you could have another eye color, what would you choose?

These round sunglasses with the yellow reflective lenses have gotten so many compliments every single time I wear them! You can see they are easily styled for work and play. The first picture is on my drive to work. The second picture is at Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) yoga!

I think these Ray Ban have just a little bit of an edge and coolness to them! I can’t imagine there being any outfit that wouldn’t look great with them from casual to fancy!

This pic was taken from an IG story I did with a filter on but it shows off my gray contacts perfectly! I was on my way to get together with high school girlfriends!
Date Night with Mr. FTF and gray eyes! I think he felt like he had a new girlfriend … LOL!

These gray contacts are beyond fun! I’m now curious to try other colors! What do you think…brown or gray eyes?

THANK YOU

A HUGE thank you to Mia and Ashley! You know that I’m all about having fun, laughing, trying new things and having new experiences plus we’re as much about friends as we are about fashion! This experience and collaboration checked off all of those boxes for me! I’m so grateful for Mia’s generosity, kindness and helping me celebrate my 60th birthday!

Oxie Affordable Optical

If you live local, you will want to visit Mia for all your vision, sunglasses, glasses and contact needs! If you’re not local, feel free to give Mia a call and she can address any questions on a phone call or via a zoom chat!

On a side note, I wanted to mention that Oxie Affordable Optical is in a really cool building in downtown Aurora. It was once a furrier and still has the vault. Mia has pictures of the old downtown area and her family displayed. It’s fun to just stop in and see the decor plus take a trip down memory lane!

of course I had to try on regular frames

Why You Should Do a 60th Birthday Photoshoot

Reasons Why You Should Take Pictures at Any Age

Those of you that have been following me on Instagram and Facebook know that I turned 60 on July 4th. I proceeded to spend most of my summer celebrating with all of my family and friends. I kicked off my season of celebrating with a photoshoot! Have you ever considered or taken pictures to celebrate your birthday/s besides when you were a kid? If you haven’t, I’m going to share my reasons why you should just DO IT!

I’m not quite sure when I realized that I wanted to take birthday pictures to celebrate turning 60. It’s not something I’ve ever done in the past or really even considered although you know that I take lots and lots of pictures of myself daily for my social media platforms and blogs, which took a lot of getting used to doing. When I started seriously thinking about pursuing this idea, initially I second guessed whether or not this was a good idea, a silly idea, a ridiculous idea but I kept coming back to the fact that for whatever reason I really wanted to commemorate this birthday. Once I embraced the idea of moving forward with my vision, I had all kinds of fun planning, pulling together my outfits; and the actual photoshoot was pure JOY!

Who knew that throwing around gobs of confetti could be such utter FUN!

Thoughts on Turning 60

Do you ever wonder why we typically only celebrate by taking pictures our youth and not our later years? Every year since my granddaughter was two (she’s turning 12 this December) my husband and I take her to get her Christmas and birthday pictures taken. Now that she’s getting older I ask her if she still wants to go. So far the answer has been yes, which makes me so happy! At what age do we quit embracing our age? I’m proposing we shouldn’t!

Have you ever looked back on pictures of yourself from years gone by and thought: “Hey! I didn’t look that bad!” Although at the time, you might have thought otherwise. I know that I’ve done that. Being critical about how you currently look is probably natural for all of us no matter our age; but why let that stop us from celebrating who and how we are in the moment especially since changes are great it won’t be getting better although I’m sure trying! LOL

Embrace your beautiful self in the here and now! We are not guaranteed tomorrow. Each day is a beautiful gift so why not celebrate?!

There was a brief moment where I thought about what others might think about my decision to take pictures celebrating turning 60. But those thoughts were BRIEF and fleeting! That’s the beauty of embracing your wisdom, feeling confident and doing things that bring you joy (not at anyone else’s expense!). Being worried or influenced by other’s thoughts or opinions is not in my repertoire! It shouldn’t be in yours either! If you need a pep talk, please reach out and I’ll be your cheerleader!

Age is mindset! If you feel old, act old, dress old, think old…yep, you’re OLD! 60 is a number not a state of mind. I’d recommend not letting any age dictate what you can and can’t do or how you should act, dress, think, feel!

Not everyone gets the gift of age! I know first hand as my dad passed away at the age of 42 from diabetes the day before my 18th birthday. Therefore, I might have been influenced to view each new decade as a gift to be embraced not dreaded. I get more opportunities to do amazing things, have fun, go on new adventures, hang out with those I love and this list could go on an on!

If you’ve been hanging around FTF for some time, you know my mantra: You’re never too old! It’s never too late! Would you agree?

Tips for a Successful Photoshoot

Once I made my decision to move forward with pictures, I searched for others who had taken birthday pictures. It was easy to find those turning 16, 21, 30….very few pictures of women embracing midlife! I didn’t let that deter me! Whenever I’d find pictures of what I liked, I saved them. As a result it also helped me decide that I wanted pictures taken in a studio. I reached out to several friends who I knew had recently done pictures with photographers most of which were taken outside. A teacher friend had posted some pictures that had been taken inside so I reached out to her. That is how I found my photographer and put the plans in motion.

The planning process was half the fun for me! Here are the steps I’d recommend so that you get the results you desire and so that the actual day of the photoshoot goes smoothly.

1. Determine the vision you have for the photoshoot and what kinds of pictures you’d like as it will determine the setting, location and potential photographer. Of course it’s important to discuss this with the photographer to ensure he/she is able to provide what you’re looking for and hoping for the end resultDetermine the vision you have for the photoshoot and what kinds of pictures you’d like as it will determine the setting, location and potential photographer. Of course it’s important to discuss this with the photographer to ensure he/she is able to provide what you’re looking for and hoping for the end result!

2. Share your vision with the photographer to ensure what you’d like can actually happen. I sent several emails sharing picture ideas that I would like duplicated or replicated as best as possible.

3. Since my birthday is on July 4th, I knew that I wanted a series of fun, fancy (sequin top, tulle skirt, feathers, tiara, champagne, etc.) pictures, but also some celebrating the fact that I’m born on the 4th. I’ve always loved my birthday so why not incorporate that it’s also a special day that the whole country celebrates. That drove my decisions on what I wanted to wear. My whole fancy look was easy to pull together out of my closet. I purchased my Vintage 1961 T-Shirt, which I easily changed into from my sequin top. My born on July 4th look caused me to purchase a t-shirt and the jean shorts covered in stars, tennis shoes with stars, etc. All of which I’ve worn again and will continue to wear. Once I had my outfits decided, I created flat lays and sent pictures to my photographer.

4. Plan for how you’d like your makeup and hair to be done for the photoshoot. This was relatively easy for me since I have a pixie. I wanted to look like I typically do on any given day; but you might want to consider if you’d like a special hair style or special makeup.

5. Depending on what you’re wearing you’ll also want to consider a manicure and a pedicure. You know I like mine to match. This was a bit of a challenge since my red, white and blue July 4th look didn’t really match my hot pink and silver glitter nails but I was wearing tennis shoes and my hands are not that noticeable. Details are always important to me even if others don’t really notice them. I always do!

6. Consider what kinds of props you’ll want if any. I had quit a few from the balloons, to the cake, to the confetti. Pre plan for all of this with your photographer. Arrange who is responsible for bringing each item, cost, etc. I was fortunate in that my photographer and his assistant (my teacher friend) took care of many of the details for me; and I reimbursed them. I had a picture of the cake that I wanted and went to many bakeries trying to duplicate what I wanted. I was quoted $100 from a bakery but just couldn’t bring myself to spend that on a cake I wasn’t going to eat and was only going to be used in a couple of pictures. I landed on the bakery at the local grocery store. They got close to what I wanted and the cost was $17. Additionally, I had all of my 60s props – tiara, glasses, rhinestone 60 for the cake. I brought flags, purse, glasses for my red, white and blue pictures. These are the kinds of small details to decide in advance.

7. You might consider bringing a friend. I knew that my friend Rachael would be my girl that I needed looking over me with a critical eye. She fluffed my tulle skirt, made sure I was tucked in, suggested poses (I’m never good at knowing what to do with my body or how to pose), asked me if I felt comfortable putting my hands and body a certain way that would photograph better. I was so appreciative to have her plus she put me at ease. While I was super excited for this day, I was also a little nervous. Probably more excited nerves than anything else. Both Rachael and Christian put me right at ease. They even had music playing and asked what kind of music I’d like to listen to while taking the pictures.

8. Most importantly have FUN! We spent a good two and a half hours taking pictures. I’m sure they spent that kind of time with me because of our friendship but I truly enjoyed the whole experience! They made me feel like a rock star; and in the end, I think we all deserve to feel amazing, like a rock star and extra special because we all are exactly that!

Every birthday is special but when you reach a milestone like your 60th birthday you have even more reason to celebrate! My recommendation: TAKE THE PICTURES!

Cheers to Celebrating Any and Every Age!

Work Wear

Many of us are heading back into work versus zooming from home; or perhaps you’re doing a combination of both. As an educator, we are heading back to work in person and very excited about it! Educators love working with children in person not via Zoom.

This outfit has been in my closet for quit some time…my work uniform typically consists of heels, dress pants, a top or blouse and a jacket or blazer plus accessories!

There’s always been something exciting for me about returning to start a new school year both as a child and now as a professional. This will be my 28th year in my school district although I’ve been in education (special education) since 1984. My current role as my district’s Prevention Coordinator allows me to work with all of the staff across the entire district. I’m often involved in training staff and supporting them to ensure the success of all students especially those with special needs. Each and every day is an opportunity to wear things I love to work and express myself. I’m probably over dressed most days but that’s really no surprise to you if you’ve been following FTF for any amount of time. The staff I work with are used to my style and I probably keep them entertained at the very least. A typical work day outfit is usually dress pants, blouse or top and more often than not a jacket or blazer. I still enjoy wearing high heels and of course being fully accessorized – including matching masks. That first day of school outfit is still a special moment in my school year no matter how old I am!

A First Day of School Picture – probably around second or third grade. Even though we were uniforms I was always excited to get my new school shoes!

Educators want to be comfortable and like to wear things that are easy to move around in with their students. Most educators I work with look forward to wearing jeans and casual looks on Friday. I’m actually perfectly comfortable and never mind being “dressed up” in my work attire!

Work Wear Casual

You’re going to be hearing about “power casual” as the new office look if you haven’t heard it already! Women will be wearing clothing they’re able to move freely in but are more structured, durable and sustainable. Comfortable dresses will replace the chic loungewear that was popular at the start of the pandemic. People want to get dressed up again but will still be looking to be comfortable. Looser silhouettes, including wide-leg jeans, , cardigan-like jackets and bedazzled sweatpants are becoming more common. I was recently asked what’s trending and my response is to wear what you love and feel comfortable in as you know I firmly believe if you feel confident and love what you’re wearing you’ll always look amazing!

Look 1

The blouse in both looks is the same with the exception of the print. Both have ruffled sleeve detailing. A blouse pairs great with dress pants, jeans and skirts. My work wear outfits (or any outfit) is never complete without a pair of heels and some accessories. A tip for saving time in the morning is to plan your outfit the night before. Lay out your whole look including your shoes, accessories and under garments. Additionally, I recommend trying things on together to ensure fit, comfort and overall look. It makes the mornings much smoother and easier to get out the door to work on time!

Here is an example of how to transition a work wear look to a more work casual look. Simply switch out the dress pants for a pair of dark wash denim jeans. I’ve added my blazer and went with my white belt and booties. If your office is casual, this look would work great or could be worn out for a date night, lunch date, etc. Blazers and jackets are great investment pieces meaning they typically don’t go out of style and can be worn for years. Blazers and jackets can easily be dressed up or even worn with a graphic tee and jeans making a blazer or jacket also super versatile! These blouses would also pair great with a denim skirt or a dressier skirt. Pull on skirts can be super comfy put have a polished work wear look and feel.

Look 2

I call this my “shorts suit”. The key is to finding a pair of shorts that aren’t too casual looking (skip super-distressed denim), and most importantly, aren’t too short or too tight. A mid-thigh or knee-length version with tailored details and a sleek, simple silhouette is usually a safe place to start. But, worth noting for shorts that don’t fit that description: A lot of the magic happens in how you style them. Luckily, all of our schools are air conditioned but a “shorts suit” is a great solution while it’s still pretty hot out or if you live in a warmer climate. While my three pieces were all bought separately, you can purchase “short suit” sets. The addition of a blazer makes it feel more work appropriate although I would definitely wear the shorts and the cami in other settings. Do you ever put on an outfit and feel like a million bucks? That’s how I felt in my “shorts suit”. That’s when you know an outfit is a win! Would you wear shorts to work?

Look 3

Black pants are a work wear staple and easily paired with almost anything. Towards the end of last school year, I decided I needed new pair of navy pants for work. Black and navy seem like safe colors for all office and work situations. I had the high waisted navy pants pictured above but they don’t work well with every style of top. Therefore, I ordered 5 different pairs, styles, brands and designers of navy pants. Of those 5 pairs, one was a perfect fit for me. If you don’t like trying things on in the stores, this is a great way to figure out what will work for you. Some brands and designers I know are a perfect match for my body type. Once you figure that out, shopping becomes a little easier.

I wanted to share how I can take several pieces and mix and match them for several looks. This top pairs great with the light blue pants shown above. Plus by removing the blazer you can see the fun details of the sleeves and the criss cross neck line. This top can also be easily paired with jeans, skirts and even shorts! In fact, I might just wear them with a pair of black shorts and my blazer for another “short suit” work wear look. What do you think?

Look 4

While black and navy seem to be business appropriate and fit most work environments, you all know that I love my color and I do wear colors to work often! I especially love the bright colors in spring and summer so typically the end of the start of the school year although I will wear pops of bright colors all year long. This look is similar to the others in that the formula for me is always a top or blouse, dress pants, heels and accessories. Details always add interest and get my attention. This blouse has the cutest ruffled shoulders and a tie detail at the back of the neck. Yellow pants might be a bold choice for some but this top can easily be worn with darker more subtle colors. Lastly, it can also be worn with jeans, shorts and skirts. You can also see these light blue pumps are getting a lot of wear.

Work Wear Fashions of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – “There’s no reason why we can’t be both comfortable and professionally dressed at the same time.  Here I pair a comfy metallic tee with an elastic waist skirt.  Pointy toe flats keep the look dressy without the pain of heels.”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “One take away from working at home over the last year and a half, is that comfort does matter – and that comfort and business fashion CAN co-exist. As we begin to work our way out of joggers and leisure wear, it’s important to have a few basic essentials, like this pair of linen pants, to help make creating work-ready looks a bit easier. Dressing for work in the California heat can be a challenge, see how I make these pants work multiple ways (and stay cool) in today’s blog post.”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style -“Work wear looks is a bit of a tricky one for me as I have been out of work for 9 years due to my illness. In addition, I have never worked in an office and when I think of a work wear look I always think of an office. And if I had worked in the office I would often have worn a suit. In the store where I was manager, we always wore the clothes from the store. This suit is from that store so I’m basically killing two birds with one stone.”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “In a casual work environment, a solid color shirt dress is a great option in summer. I loved all black of the 1990s. Thus, I own a couple of LDB in different styles. This black shirt dress is my favorite work dress.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “There’s no dress code where I work – pretty much anything goes – but I still like to make the effort and dress smartly. Most of my work is done from home lately, but I do have the odd few days in the office. I would like to wear heels, but in reality I can only wear them for short periods of time. I’ve had this skirt for a couple of years but haven’t worn it before. The top is an old one that comes out of storage every summer. My red bag is one of favourites for work as it holds all of my essentials.”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “When I was in my 20’s into my early 30’s, I worked in NYC when your personal style was just as important as the quality of your work. It’s been a hot minute since I dressed for corporate America, NYC-style and this is sort of how I imagine I’d dress if I magically dropped back into that life.”

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles “Amazon red swing dress perfect to head back to my kindergarten classroom in September is comfortable. I paired the dress with Target neutral slides.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “Whether you work from home or are heading back to the office, August marks summer’s last fling.  This post is packed with fresh ideas for work including great at-home styles, looks for teachers and great options for those headed back to the office.  Plus a few bonuses to make getting back into your post-summer routine with ease.”

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com   “Back to the office means back to the classroom for me!  Always feel like I owe it to my fashion students to look bright and colourful and happy to see them (even if still online!).  In keeping with a professional look, thought this fun skirt paired with my favourite colour of blouse would be just on point to make them smile😊”

Joy – Joyousstyling “My Full Time job title is Executive Clinical Account Specialist in Women’s Health.  My work wardrobe is business professional. I love easy sophisticated looks. An easy back to work look. I love a light plaid high waisted midi skirt for a sophisticated business look. I paired it with a classic satin ivory blouse and my favorite cap toe sling-backs. Jewelry added is my white Abalone KS choker.”

Styling Tips for an Apple Shaped Body

Characteristics of an Apple Shaped Body

Typical characteristics of the apple body shape are a large bust, narrow hips and a full midsection.
This makes the body appear like an apple shape.

  • Rounder, wider shoulder line and flattish bottom
  • Average to big bust
  • Ribcage and back appear somewhat wide
  • Fullness around the mid-section
  • Little to undefined waistline
  • Narrow hips
  • Slim limbs and nice legs
  • Weight gains are first visible in the central torso/tummy area.

How to Camouflage a Chubby Middle

Plus Lori’s Favorite T-Shirts

It’s no secret that Lori refers to herself as an apple shape and often talks about her “chubby middle”. I think we all have what we might consider our “problem areas” that we try to disguise or camouflage. Would you agree? Hopefully, you have a laugh or two as you watch Lori’s styling tip and her favorite t-shirts from Talbots.

Shirts, T-Shirts & Other Tops

To draw the eye away from the midsection and towards the bust and shoulders, shirts should highlight the latter area while skimming over the tummy.

Opt for shirts with embellishments around the neck and shoulder areas to accentuate them. Another good option is tops that wrap at your natural waistline and flare at the hip. This will conceal a bigger tummy.

If you want to hide some extra weight around the midsection, you could also look for tops with diagonal lines, big prints, and texture. These are better for concealing than solid colours.

‍Don’t tuck your top in your bottoms, and make sure it is long enough to cover the tummy. Preferably it should end below the hipline.

Avoid crop tops and tight-fitted shirts that would highlight the wider tummy area. Also, stay away from details and embellishments around the midriff area so as not to attract extra attention to this area. Finally, steer clear of tops that end above the hipline since this would make the torso look bigger.

“We like to bring Caribbean-inspired prints and colors to our collection. Highlighted are the Flora and Fauna to create a FUN & FRESH look transporting you to your favorite tropical destination.”

The first time I spoke with Jinniva on the phone we had an immediate connection and bond! I could feel her energy, positive vibe, love for life and fashion as we spoke! It’s that feeling you get when you connect with someone right away! Jinniva and I were initially connected through our mutual friend Gail Gensler. (You can read about Gail HERE.) I had seen Gail wearing beautiful clothes from Roatan Vibes Boutique on Instagram! The colors and designs are truly a tropical vision of loveliness and so on trend right now! There hasn’t been a single piece that hasn’t grabbed my attention as I scroll through the squares. If you’re an avid FTF follower you know I’m all about bright, unique, comfortable pieces and am especially loving all of the tropical prints this summer! Jinniva was kind enough to allow me to pick an outfit, which she then gifted me.

My Roatan Vibes Look

I was thrilled to be gifted this body suit and wide leg pants, which when worn together look like a jumpsuit! I have to admit that I stepped out of my comfort zone; and you know I recommend you do so as well now and then. This is the first body suit I’ve owned in forever! My torso is long and most body suits don’t fit correct. This one fit beautifully and was the perfect length. Running to the bathroom was also a concern, but the closure is super easy to work. The high waisted pants hold you in nicely! Sometimes I’m challenged with side zip pants but these pants didn’t pose the challenges my body type sometimes encounters. My curvy body was fine with the side zip…winning! (Always be willing to try something you normally wouldn’t because you might surprise yourself – in this case the bodysuit and side zip!!). The pants are lined until the knee for a smooth silhouette; and they have pockets! Since the bodysuit is fitted, the wide legs are balanced out. You know that feeling you get when you put on an outfit and feel fantastic and confident…you walk and stand taller and others take notice…that’s this outfit!

I paired my outfit with my gold wedge sandals and gold accessories! The flower in my hair came in the packaging with my outfit so of course I had to wear it in my photos! Accessories always complete a look!

These two pieces can easily be worn with other items. The body suit can be matched with shorts, a skirt or jeans. Yes, you can wear shorts at any age if you’re comfortable in them! You know I’m a fan of shorts all summer long! The pants can be worn as a swimsuit cover up and with other tops. There will be so many colors that can be paired with the pants so it’s really just your preference!

My preference is to almost always be fancy. It’s who I am and how I’m most comfortable. However, this outfit is easily dressed down – think about wearing flat sandals and even flip flops, add a floppy hat and beach bag or tote! You’d be beach ready!

Oh the places I will go wearing my Roatan Vibes outfit…tropical beach vacations, backyard parties, girl’s night out or lunch dates, date night with hubby, a summer festival now that we’re able to get out more…my list is endless! Where would you wear my tropical look? This is a classic outfit of superb quality that will be in style for years to come! It’s perfect for any summer event!

Stylish Monday & Link Up Party

Sizzling Styles for a Backyard BBQ

Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year for so many reasons: the warm, hot weather, lots of fun things to do outside, my birthday is July 4th, summer break and who doesn’t love a backyard BBQ with friends and loved ones?! This month we’re sharing our favorite “Sizzling Styles for a Backyard BBQ”! The first thing that comes to my mind for a summer BBQ is gingham! Doesn’t gingham scream summer?!

Gingham

Pink and Red Ruffled Shoulder Gingham Top: My Closet (Loft)
Scalloped Shorts
White Scalloped Shorts: My Closet (Loft)

Gingham now comes in so many fun colors and color combinations! There’s bound to be something in a gingham print that appeals to all. I think it’s a classic print and stands the test of time. However, you can find fun gingham items with unique elements like the pleated ruffled shoulders and neck on this particular top as well as the red and pink combination. I shared this look with you last year as well as a whole post on gingham. To read that post, click HERE. Gingham is a happy print and easily pairs with solids or prints – think print mixing! Last year, I paired my gingham shorts with a floral top, which would also be perfect for a BBQ!

Here is my latest gingham purchase: Jessica Simpson gingham sandals. Aren’t the heels sooooo cute?! They also come in black and white (I’ve linked them below.) I plan to pair the sandals with this top from Old Navy. The top also comes in black and white gingham and blue and white stripes (I’ve linked the top below.). As you can guess, I’m going to add daisy earrings and yellow accessories. Yellow and red is a fun summer BBQ color combination! Would you agree? I think it will be the perfect backyard BBQ look for my mom’s birthday celebration this coming Saturday. She’s turning 84 and we’re having turkey on the Weber grill!

Sizzling Styles for a Backyard BBQ of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – “This year the 4th of July fell on a Sunday, so I created this patriotic look to wear both to church and then a Backyard BBQ.”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “Even in the summertime, California evenings can get chilly, which is why for every sundress I own, there must be a coordinating piece to layer on when the sun goes down. See more on how I style one of my favorite maxi dresses, for a day-to-night backyard BBQ ready look, on the blog.”

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “I myself often wear a long dress for such an evening. Firstly, you have less chance of being stung by the mosquitoes. And in the evening it usually cools down a bit and then a long dress is very nice. Preferably also a slightly wider dress or one that is a bit forgiven, because well, with a bbq I always eat too much! This pre loved dress is really great. Very elastic but also quite thick, so ideal for a person who is always feeling cold like me.”

Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits – “The hubs and I grill out every single weekend in the summer…heck, we grill out almost all year long! My typical backyard barbecue outfit usually consists of a swimsuit & cover-up, but just in case we have actual company over I would probably wear my fav Bermuda shorts and a cute top, like this one from Old Navy… I love the smocking detail.”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “Backyard BBQ in Alaska means potluck and all meat and fish you eat was killed by one of your friends. When you are not a hunter or into fishing you bring whatever grows in your yard. Dressing wise it means combat or hiking boots, jeans and a tightly woven shirt to not become dinner for the mosquitoes when the BBQ  is in the evening. When the event is in the afternoon, a skirt like I wear in the photo is fine.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “This cotton jumpsuit is super comfortable and looks quite basic ..until you see the back! The sequin parrot gives guests something to look at while I’m tending to the BBQ!”

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – “We had a backyard barbecue at my neighbor’s house a few weeks back, so I photographed what I actually wore to her house…this amazing new tie dye dress that has been in constant rotation since I got it back in May. I am also sharing swimsuit photos in my post…do pop by my blog to see it all!”

Gwen – Gwen Lives Well and Instagram – GwenLivesWell -“Nothing screams summer more than barbecuing with family and friends. ‘Tis the season for hot dogs, hamburgers, and yummy side dishes. So much fun! And you know what’s even more fun? Deciding on what to wear to a barbecue – yes, it’s a thing. Just ask my fashionable fashionistas because this is what we chose as this month’s style collab. Backyard barbecue-style apparently is a real thing – who knew? So let’s see what backyard barbecue-style means to these stylish sisters. This should be interesting!!”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “Hosting a summer BBQ is one of the joys of summer.  From choosing just the right recipes, tableware and what to wear.  Today I am sharing BBQ favorites including an airy hostess dress everyone looks great in.”

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com   “This month’s Stylish Mondays calls for BBQ attire- and this is exactly what I’d style up for enjoying a cook out amongst friends and family.  Summer and sunshine want me in bright yellow! Love me some bright happy colour under a large brim hat, cool drinks, great company and delicious food- I’m ready!”

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles – “Bbq style to me means a thrifted striped dress and plaid bag that is thrifted too.  Sneakers are a must too while at a bbq.”

The Legacy I Want to Leave Behind

Guest Post by Gail Gensler

In a recent conversation with my friend Gail, I mentioned that I’d be going out of town for a week on a girl’s vacation to celebrate our 60th milestone birthday’s. I commented that I probably wouldn’t be posting a blog that week and taking a social media break. Gail very graciously offered to allow me to post one of her amazing blogs so you wouldn’t be bummed that you missed a week. I know you’ll enjoy reading Gail’s post. You probably recall my Feature a Friend post on Gail. To read that post, click HERE.

We can’t take anything with us when we leave this world. We can leave plenty behind, though.
That’s our legacy, and it’s an important thing to think about as we go through our lives, doing the
best we can every day. Here’s the legacy I want to leave behind.

The Problem

We live in an age of inclusivity. Everywhere you look in movies, TV, advertisements, etc., you
are seeing more and more diversity, giving people from all walks of life a chance to be
represented. The LGBTQ community is establishing a firmer footing. Plus-sized models are
becoming more popular in the fashion industry. Minority and female film directors have done
better during awards season than they ever have. The list goes on. Inclusivity plays a huge
societal role in 2021.

And yet, ageism still exists.
There simply aren’t enough men and women my age on billboards or in magazines, particularly
when it comes to fashion. When’s the last time you saw a woman over 60 modeling a workout
brand? Mind you, there are plenty of women my age who kick butt in the gym and love to look
good while doing it. Why aren’t we marketed towards? Shouldn’t today’s “diversity” cover
people of all ages as well? I guess not. Inclusivity has done wonders for people of different races,
genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, etc., but it seems to miss out on the age part.
Apart from the moral issue of it all, leaving out the older demographic is also just a bad business
decision. People my age are homeowners. We have jobs. The older generation is the one that
tends to have the most disposable income, since we’ve been working the longest. There is plenty
of untapped potential in this demographic, yet advertisers seem to overlook us in their marketing
efforts. Why not try to get us to buy your products by showcasing older models who embrace a
fun, fit, active lifestyle? Makes sense to me. This rarely happens, however, which led me to my
ultimate goal.

My Current Mission

My name is Gail Gensler, I am 60 years old (young), and I am a pro-aging fitness enthusiast and
lifestyle influencer. This is something I’ve pursued for a few years now, though I haven’t lost
even one bit of steam; my motivation has only gotten stronger.
I got into this space because I simply couldn’t stand by anymore and let men and women my age
be influenced into dressing, exercising, and living a certain way. I couldn’t continue seeing
people avoid doing something they love because society deemed it inappropriate for someone
their age. No more ageism. I’m a 60-year-old who enjoys getting after it in the gym and in her
social life, even though I’m not particularly gifted or talented in any one area. I know there are others out there who would love to do what I do, but aren’t willing to because of a misplaced
need to fit into a ridiculous mold.
I’m out to fix that. I want to inspire younger generations to not “fear the years” or take their
wellness for granted. If you’re someone who thinks this mentality could help them, I’d love to
connect with you!

My Legacy

This mission of mine is what I want to shape my legacy. I hope I’m remembered as a woman
who changed how people thought about aging, specifically as it relates to fitness and social
settings. I don’t know how many people I’ll reach. Maybe 1,000. Maybe 100,000. But if I’m able
to positively influence people, particularly my daughter, staff, and clients, to dress, exercise, and
live the way they want no matter what year they were born, I’ve done my job. I want to change
the narrative about aging as it relates to fitness and beauty.
Avicii’s song “The Nights” has a lyric that goes “One day you’ll leave this world behind, so live a
life you will remember.” I am a sucker for a good quote, and this one in particular strikes a
powerful chord with me. I hope I’ve accomplished that by the time I leave this world behind.
Being a pro-aging fitness enthusiast and lifestyle influencer is my ticket to doing just that.

Stylish Monday and Linkup Party

Fresh Summer Style

When I think of summer styling, I think of bold, bright, fun, neon colors! I also think of eyelet, fruity and abstract patterns! In Illinois, we spend so much of the time in colder temps causing us to wear darker shades. Therefore; I’m excited to start wearing all the bright and fun kitschy prints and patterns! What do you think of when you think about summer styling?

Fruity Prints

When I found out that this was going to be our theme for June, I knew that I had lots of bold and bright colors along with some fun summer prints/patterns. When looking for what was currently trending or available, I came across this cute fruity camisole! I love the bright colors, assortment of fruits, adjustable straps and peplum. I initially wore this look to work so I added my half tee underneath allowing me to wear my bra with straps and have more coverage on top plus I added my pink denim jacket. (To read a previous blog post on the Half Tee Layering Solution, click HERE). I thought it would be fun to pattern mix the fruit with the polka dots. Added my lemon earrings and necklace and voila, feel’in fruity and summer ready!

Lemon Earrings and Necklace: Etsy Cora’s Den
White Top: Half Tee (My Closet)
Polka Dot Pants: Versona
Fruity Camisole: Loft

In hind sight, seeing these pictures causes me to think that I shouldn’t have paired the fruit print with the polka dots. I think it looked better in real life than it does here. The proportion of the polka dots to the fruit feels disproportionate. It would have looked better if the polka dots were smaller and the fruit pattern was larger….larger on the top and smaller on the bottom would have been more visually appealing! I wanted to still include these pictures so that I could share my learning with you and recommendations on how to create a more proportionate look in case you’re interested in mixing prints. What are you thoughts?

Early last week, I had a doctor’s appointment and errands to run. I decided to pair the same camisole with my Chico’s white tank, yellow shorts and white denim jacket. I wore my natural wedges and my round wicker purse. My lemon accessories rounded out the look.

Wedges: Target
Shorts: My Clost (Loft)
Round Wicker Purse: My Closet
White Denim Jacket: White House Black Market

I received many compliments when I was out and about on this particular day! However, one of them saddened me and I wanted to share with you why. A woman complimented me and said that I looked so cute and so young. I prompted her that I really wasn’t that young. She replied that I was much younger than her but with a mask on it can be hard to tell. She added that when she was younger she dressed much cuter. That has always been the premise behind Fashion Trends and Friends. No matter your age or your size you can always dress cute, be cute and trendy if that’s important to you. I could feel the sadness in her comments to me. My plan is to NEVER decide that I’m too old to dress cute! I hope you do the same! Call me if you need a pep talk!

Lemon Print

Last year, I did a whole blog post on the lemon print trend. I’ve noticed quit a bit of it again this year so pull out all your lemon print and style it up! To read the previous blog post, click HERE.

Pineapples and Bananas

Thought I would share a couple of other fruit inspired looks from years gone by that I would still pull out and wear again this summer! The pineapple cold shoulder dress/tunic is super comfy and very colorful! I’ve had it and the pineapple bag for several years. It’s easy to dress up or down or even as a swimsuit cover up.

This banana print top was purchased several years ago as well. I love that the banana leaf print is currently trending so this is a great fit for this summer! Is anyone having a Carmen Miranda moment?

If fruity prints are too much for you, you can easily consider adding an accessory such as jewelry, a fruity purse or even a hair accessory!

SHOP SUMMER PRINTS

Fresh Summer Styles of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Amy – Amy’s Creative Pursuits – Love fruit prints but you don’t want to look like a piece of  fruit?  Here’s  how to incorporate the fun fruit print trend into a neutral outfit.

Andy – Pearls and Pantsuits – I love the retro feel of this fruit print tiered shirt-dress. I was looking for a simple tiered dress on Amazon, when this one caught my eye. I couldn’t resist its charm! I styled it with my red gingham print sandals that have been on repeat this summer. The fruit print and gingham combo makes me happy!

Shelbee – Shelbee on the Edge – I bought this bright orange blazer a few months ago but had trouble styling it until I found this adorable fruity printed swimsuit. And I figured why not style a blazer over my swimsuit. It’s not like I follow fashion rules anyway!

Lucy – Lucy Bertoldi.com   This month’s collaboration got me digging into my wardrobe for something fresh and delish to style up.  Found this fun lime maxi decorated with cherries- how sweet!  Lime green is already a favourite with me- especially for summer- and with the added fun red-cherry print, well that’s enough to get me smiling😊  Fresh, quench-thirsting look for this hot Montreal summer- I’m ready!

Nancy –  Nancy’s Fashion Style – “I am feeling like a basket of fruit or a box full of fruit sweets, lol, in this outfit! Oranges, strawberries and raspberries! Love that color combination! I have ombre nails at the moment with red and orange. You can take a look at last Tuesday’s post for that!”

Suzanne – Ask Suzanne Bell – “I love the vibrant pattern and color of this bold wrap skirt; it feels so optimistic, fresh, and cheerful. Bold prints can be a bit intimidating to style, so I say keep it simple, with neutral pieces; like this black ruffle top, raffia bag, and hat. From there, allow the print piece, to be the star of the show!”

Nicole – High Latitude Style – “In interior Alaska, summer temperatures remain pleasant in the drought season except when it rains. The record is 100F in Ft. Yukon, but we already think 85F is too hot. In the monsoon season, it feels unpleasant due to the high humidity and temperatures in the 50F or so. Thus, in early summer, it’s shorts and tank tops with flip flops, in late summer, it’s rain gear and layering. Since the Sun is in the sky 24/7, sun protective clothes are my go-to.”

Ada – Elegance and Mommyhood – “Fruity Floral Flounce!!! That’s what I am calling this outfit. Between the florals and paisley design of my ruffled skirt and those bright orange sandals I got the citrus fruity vibes and all the Summery florals going!”

Michele – On Instagram as Seechele_styles – “Feeling fruity in my Target dress with lemon and limes and oranges on it.”

Emma – The Style Splash – “I bought this Fabienne Chapot striped cherry print dress on eBay. I’m a big fan of the Dutch brand and their quirky prints. A shirt dress is summer staple for me as they’re cool and easy to wear.”

Nina – Sharing a Journey – “We are definitely out and about these days.  My bright colors mirror my optimism for the sunny summer days ahead.”
