Mid-Lifer and Millennial Fashion

Fall Fashion Favorites

Two Years Ago: Brittany (Millennial) and Julie (Mid-Lifer) – Friends and Fellow Fashionistas

It always has been and continues to be my premise and why Fashion Trends and Friends was originated that your age and your size shouldn’t limit what you like to wear, where you can shop or whether or not you can wear what is currently trending and look chic. You CAN wear the latest trends and feel stylish no matter your age or your size!

Last Fall: Julie (Mid-lifer) and Brittany (Millennial) – Friends and Fellow Fashionistas

My favorite millennial Brittany and I have been doing Mid-lifer and Millennial posts for the past several years. We typically do a spring post but Covid got in the way of that this year. This is our annual fall post!

If you’re an FTF follower, you recall my friend, millennial cutie Brittany.  FTF has done previous blog posts with Brittany (Eyelash Extensions and Millennial and Mid-Lifer Shop and Style Fall Fashion Trends and A Millennial and a Mid-lifer Style Lilly Pulitzer).  Brittany is Lori’s niece.  She and I had an immediate connection over all things beauty and fashion.  Brittany is passionate about fashion and likes to look stylish at work (although she’s working remotely) and even at home.  She loves to find good deals and enjoys accessorizing from head to toe!  I believe she is my millennial clone!  A girl after my heart for sure! We often text each other for opinions and fashion advice! I adore Brittany!

Cold Shoulder

When Brittany and I first start collaborating on what we’d be wearing for our fall post, I like to give her free reign. I want to know what she’s liking and what’s trending for millennials. This year Brittany’s pick was this Camel Cold Shoulder Long Sleeve Sweater With Turtleneck from Lime Lush Boutique. If you’re a mid-lifer pushing 60 like myself, you might look at this model and think, “No way!” That’s exactly why I like putting this post together…keep an open mind!

To Shop This Sweater, Click Here: Camel Cold Shoulder Long Sleeve Sweater with Turtleneck by Lime Lush

If you’re wondering if cold shoulder tops, sweaters, etc. are still trending, the answer is a definite yes. However, the fit has changed slighted for fall 2020. What’s trending is the slouchy, oversized, cropped look. In all honesty, I wasn’t sure about it when it first arrived and was doubting I could pull it off. I’m pretty sure that I texted that to Brittany when it arrived! However, that’s exactly why I like to let Brittany pick. It forces me to try different things that I might not have given a chance or even wanted to try on to begin with…the slouchy, oversized is good for camouflaging any midsection flaws! It can be left untucked or half tucked. Plus everyone has good shoulders!

Brittany opted for her camel colored over the knee boots with gold accessories. I chose leopard accents in my boots and belt. When planning we talk about what we’re wearing and not get so into the details about accessories and yet we pretty much accessorize similarly. We usually have a good laugh when we see each other’s final put together looks as they are so similar!

One wrong step and we’re in the Fox River…LOL!

If you want to add a new piece to your fall winter wardrobe, we recommend considering a cold shoulder sweater or sweater with cut outs, which I referenced in a recent blog post: The Sweater Edit.

SHOP COLD SHOULDER SWEATERS

Cream Sweaters

Cream colored sweaters, camel colored sweaters both considered neutrals are trending for fall. Neutrals are great because they look good on everyone and can be accessorized in so many ways. Brittany opted for leopard accents with her scarf and pumps. Since my sweater has a bit of a camo print, I opted for gold and pearls. My sweater was purchased on a recent fall getaway to Saugatuck, Michigan. Glik’s is not a store in my area although you can order on line. We opted to keep our blue jeans on since we were changing in our cars. However, both of our sweaters could easily be worn with dress pants and white jeans.

SHOP CREAM SWEATERS

Cardigans

It seems to me that cardigans are always in style no matter the year or your age or your size. They are the perfect piece to layer over almost any other clothing item. Cardigans are also body forgiving and can hide any perceived flaws! Brittany styled her crocheted cardigan over a black dress. I put my cardigan with a camisole. A cardigan is easy to add to almost any look and for any event from casual to dressy. I liked the fall colors in my cardi from Kohl’s. My cami and jeans are from my closet originally from Express.

This leopard cross body bag could have easily been worn with my cold shoulder sweater, which is what I had meant to do. However, it also goes well with this cardi and the boots I’m wearing could easily be switched out for my leopard booties. You know that it’s always a good idea to be thinking about multiple ways to style one item.

Target Haul

Graphic T-Shirts Part 2 of 2

Target North Aurora, Illinois

You might recall in part 1 of Target Haul that I had run into shop for something, which I don’t even recall what, and ended up buying three graphic t-shirts. To see the first blog post (Part 1 or 2), click HERE. Target had so many really cute graphic tees (all under $15.) that I could have easily come home with even more. Graphic tees continue to have a strong hold in the “what’s trending” arena. Therefore, I thought it might be helpful to share with you all the many ways a graphic tee can be styled from working out to a full on fancy look! Here are 10 ways to style one graphic t-shirt. I chose the Blondie tee. It is gray with red and silver metallic writing. It also has yellow, blue and white. Blondie reminds me of my college days and evokes many happy memories! I still enjoy Blondie’s music today!

Look 1

It’s easy to think casual when styling a t-shirt. That’s probably how most would think about styling it. I started with my my Level 99 snakeskin print skinny jeans from Evereve, and my red Marc Fisher booties. All in my closet! I was feel’in kinda sassy in this look. This tee would pair well with black, red, blue or white jeans or pants and shorts. Since I consider this a casual look, I’d wear it out to run errands, out for a casual lunch or dinner and casual get togethers.

Look 2

Next, I would add a faux leather jacket or blazer, which elevates this casual look slightly. It doesn’t matter the time of the year for me. I almost always have a coat, jacket, sweater or blazer to add on for additional warmth. Any of those options could be layered onto this look. I opted for my faux red leather moto jacket. However, you could add a black, white or denim jacket, blazer or sweater. The moto jacket keeps the vibe kind of sassy and edgy, which I like! The moto jacket is from my closet. When I originally bought this jacket, I liked it because of all the metal studs.

Look 3

It’s no secret that I love clothing items with some kind of interest, details or something that makes them unique and stand out. This skirt totally fits the bill especially with the large lace up and grommets along the side. Since the skirt is a pull on and has quit a bit of stretch, it’s super comfortable. I opted for my Sam Edelman pumps covered with metal studs. However, you could also pair this skirt and tee with some sneakers – think the traditional Adidas black and white sneakers. I could still add on a moto jacket, denim jacket or blazer. When styling a graphic tee, it can easily be paired with a skirt from faux leather, which is having a major moment, to denim skirts to a tulle skirt, to a metallic midi! Have fun styling and let your imagination and creativity shine through!

Skirt: My Closet (I.N.C. – Macy’s)

Looks 4, 5 and 6

As mentioned, faux leather everything is having a major moment. Next up, my Blondie tee paired with my faux leather shorts! Ever since I got these shorts, I’ve been thinking about all the outfits I could create incorporating them. Looks 4, 5 and 6 are combined because I wanted to show you how the shoe choice can change the whole look and feel of the outfit.

Adidas: My Closet
Faux Leather Shorts: Versona

Adding layers is always an option so between my faux red leather jacket and this fringetastic jacket I have lots of options! In the previous post, I wore this fringetastic jacket with my AC/DC graphic t-shirt.

In my opinion, the Adidas sneakers give this whole look a more casual feel. Sneakers are super trendy and come in so many colors and embellishments now so I’m more inclined to reach for them than ever in the past. Heels tend to be more my jam!

Guess Embellished Combat Boots: My Closet (DSW)

For an edgier feel, I chose my embellished combat boots. Combat boots are super trendy right now. I like these because of the pearl and metal embellishments.

Lastly, I opted for my Sam Edelman pumps covered in metal studs. Pumps always give an outfit a fancier/dressier feel.

Don’t ever estimate the power of shoes and accessories to elevate and change the feel of an outfit. All of these shoe choices work. The choice would depend on the feeling desired or event being attended!

Look 7

For look 7, I took off the shorts and added leggings. The pumps keep the look slightly more formal. This outfit could easily be worn with the Adidas sneakers, the combat boots or my red booties. I’d also wear this to work out in minus the jewelry and the pumps. If you’re not feeling confident wearing leggings with a tee and prefer more body coverage, think about how to add some layers, which I do in look 8.

Leggings: My Closet (Target)

Look 8

To add some body coverage and feel more confident in going out in leggings, I’ve added a duster. In all honesty, this duster has been in my closet for the longest time with the tags still on it. I’m not sure why I haven’t worn it before but I am a sucker for sales and purchased it when Carson’s was going out of business. It’s a little too big for me now but keeping it open masks that’s it a little large on me. Adding a duster or a cardigan helps for added warmth, coverage and elevates the look.

I think this outfit would look good with some red shoes and a red purse for an added pop of color! Additionally, I might try adding a belt.

Look 9

I’m calling this the fancy look! I’ve paired the Blondie tee with a pair of silver shimmery high waisted, paper bag pants and kept on my Sam Edelman pumps. Although difficult to see, the silver shimmery pants play well off of the metallic print in the tee. Wish we could go out dancing as I’m totally feeling my disco days in this outfit!

Silver Shimmery Pants: Kohl’s

Look 10

Lastly, I added my white suede moto jacket to the silver shimmery pants outfit. I think this jacket could also be worn with any of the previous bottoms I’ve already shared: leggings, faux leather shorts, skirt…

Moto Jacket: On Deck

I really could have kept going with outfit creations! This blog was so fun to put together…clothes were flying! I hope you got some styling inspiration and are now thinking about wearing graphic tees differently! It’s pretty amazing that one clothing item (graphic tee) under $15 could be styled with things already in my closet to create over 10 looks! Did you have a favorite?

Diana recently purchased these two graphic tees from Target. Love how she styled both. An option I hadn’t thought of is layering the tee over a button down. That’s one reason I love IG! You can get so many ideas and styling inspiration from other women!

Stylish Monday & Link Up Party

The Sweater Edit

According to Who What Wear, the sweater trends for this fall and winter season include the following: sets, embellishments – “adornments” and cutouts! In my book, all three of these are winners! If you’ve followed FTF for any amount of time, you know that I’m a huge fan of all things matching so sets make me happy! Unique and interesting pieces always draw my attention. The more embellishments the better. Give me all the sequins, bows, feathers, jewels…details makes my heart sing!

Sweater Set with Rhinestone Flower Buttons: H & M

Who doesn’t love a cut out that’s strategically placed for a little added sexy…think cold shoulders and other exposures like backs. I’ve had my eye on a couple of sweaters with cutouts!

My fellow fashionistas and I did a previous post titled Cozy Chic. To see that post, click HERE. I shared my love of sweaters, cardigans and all things warm, cozy and cute! It’s safe to say that I probably don’t need a single new sweater but my love is so deep for them that I know that won’t happen…LOL! Raise your hand if you can relate!

Rock and Love Sweater

This Rock and Love Sweater grabbed my attention on Instagram when I saw Terri of I am Terri B wearing it with her tulle skirt. Terri informed me that she had gotten the sweater from Lynn & Lily Online Boutique. (I love supporting small women run businesses!) The rest is history…although I had to wait for the temps to cool off a little! I’ve had so much fun styling it. Here are at least three ways it can be worn.

Look 1

I could hardly wait to wear my faux leather leggings with this sweater. Since I live in Illinois and the fall can be chilly, plus I’m always cold, I opted to wear black tights with my shorts. Combat boots are having a major moment so grabbing my Guess embellished boots seemed like they’d pair perfect.

Faux Leather Shorts: Versona
Embellished Boots: My Closet (Guess – DSW)

Look 2

My tulle skirt look with the Rock and Love sweater was inspired by Terri. All I did was switch out the shorts for the skirt and voila! For added warmth in the winter, I plan to add one of my moto jackets.

Tulle Skirt: My Closet (Amazon)

Look 3

Faux leather everything is also on trend and having a major moment. These leather joggers are as good as wearing sweat pants! They’re super soft and super comfortable. The joggers are a perfect pairing for the Rock and Love sweater.

Faux Leather Joggers: Express

The styling options with the sweater could be endless – jeans, pants, skirts. The options are only limited by your imagination. How would you style this sweater?

You can shop my sweater at Lynn and Lily and follow them on Instagram. (By the way, she’s a new small business owner. I love supporting women in business!)

SUZANNE: “Out here in California, the weather has her own idea of what fall looks like. With cold mornings to very high afternoon temperatures; our Autumn weather tends to be a bit manic, making my go-to knit something I can throw on and off with ease in the form of a cardigan or sweater vest. Layered over anything from jeans and a t-shirt, to a transitional sundress, either of these California wardrobe staples allows me to enjoy the look of “fall”, despite our Indian Summer weather”.

Suzanne Bell of Ask Suzanne Bell

NANCY: “I love sweaters, because I am always cold. The thicker the better! But I don’t like cols, they don’t look good on me. Which is a pity because they are so much warmer then a v-neck. Ah well, the things you suffer for the sake of fashion!”

Nancy Baten of Nancy’s Fashion Style

ADA: “A colorblocked pink and fuchsia sweater is perfect for October particularly, because Pink raises awareness for Breast Cancer Month. This happy, bright piece is a new find from Target as are those new leopard pants (wish I had sized down in them, they have a hidden elastic band). Throw in a pumpkin, and I am ready for Fall with all of my sweaters!”

SHELBEE: “I found this cute fox sweater at JCPenney a few years ago and I have never shared it on my blog before. I love the fun geometric graphic of the fox. Foxes are my favorite animal so I added my little rose gold fox necklace, too. This sweater is perfect for the beginning of sweater weather because it is a lighter weight knit and has 3/4 sleeves. I can even comfortably pair this sweater with shorts for a cute transitional look.”

Shelbee Montoro of Shelbee on the Edge

NICOLE: “I saw this red cashmere sweater in a consignment store. It was my size, color and the price was right. So I gave it a new home in my closet despite I already had two other red cashmere sweaters. However, they have a turtle and crew neck, respectively. Thus, a V-neck was different enough. And, for my excuse, one can never have too many neutrals, right?”

Nicole Molders of High Latitude Style

EMMA: “I won this tunic sweater from Bonmarche in a Christmas giveaway on Instagram a couple of years ago. The length gives me the option of wearing it as a dress with thick tights and long boots as I’ve done here, or over black skinny jeans and ankle boots when it’s colder.”

Emma Peach of Style Splash

NINA: “Cozy sweaters and cardigans make styling fall outfits so much fun.”

Nina Bandoni of Sharing a Journey

ANDY: “Ponchos are such a fun and easy way to add a light layer to an outfit. This plaid one has been one of my wardrobe staples for years. I love the plaid pattern and autumnal colors. I can’t wait to pull it out each fall!”

What to Wear to a Wedding

Wedding Guest Dressing

Sadly, this season’s weddings have mostly been scaled way back due to the pandemic requiring a limited number of people in a given space. Mr. FTF and I haven’t attended a wedding in quit a few years. This fall we were suppose to attend two weddings – one in September and one in October. My niece got married in September in Oklahoma.

Our friends daughter is getting married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in a couple of weeks. We were looking forward to attending both and getting away for long weekends. Sadly, that didn’t happen. I’m hoping to get to celebrate with both couples next year!

What to Wear to a Wedding

If you’re lucky enough to be able to attend a wedding this year, there are fewer and fewer fashion rules because couples are just more progressive than they used to be. Some brides are passing up traditional gowns for elegant pants, the occasional groom is skipping the typical black tux for a pastel suit, and even bridesmaids are ditching the cookie-cutter dresses for something they can wear over and over again. You know what that means? Guests also have just as much freedom with their styles. I do recommend you gage what you wear based on the venue of the wedding. If it’s an outdoor wedding on a farm, casual is more appropriate compared to a wedding held in a villa or mansion. In my opinion, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed…fancier equals better!

Wedding Guest Look One

This dress was initially purchased simply because I feel in love with it. I was on a Board of Directors for a boy’s home in Chicago. We had annual fundraisers downtown Chicago requiring me to be dressed up. This dress fit the bill. That was the only time I wore this dress and thought for sure I would pull it out and wear it to one of the weddings this fall. The ruching is very figure flattering. The top has a built in bra. Besides the dress being beautiful, it’s very comfortable. It came with the rhinestone pin making it easy to pair with some rhinestone earrings and bracelet. The bag is actually my mom’s from the 1950’s. The box is actually made of glass with metal detail surrounding the glass, marble on the top and an acrylic hand. Gray satin sandals with rhinestone embellishments complete wedding guest look one!

SHOP BARE SHOULDER DRESSES

Wedding Guest Look Two

Recently, a good friend I work with gifted me two black dresses that no longer fit her. They’ve been hanging in my closet waiting for a reason to be pulled out and styled. This dress is embellished with rhinestones and beading. It’s figure flattering because of the wrap style. The scoop back is attractive without being too low. Since this dress is embellished, I only had to add earrings and bracelets. Pulled out my black satin pumps with rhinestone straps and beaded clutch to complete the look.

Many years ago, we went to a wedding of a friend’s daughter. At the time, fascinators were all the rage. I still have mine and decided to pull it out and added it to this look. The wedding guests that didn’t know me thought I was from England! LOL

SHOP BLACK BEADED DRESSES

Wedding Guest Look Three

This last look is also of a dress that my friend from work gifted me since it no longer fits her. The rosettes on the bodice and the tiered material makes this dress easy to style and gives this dress interest. Since it’s solid black, you could easily add a pop of color or add rhinestones, which I opted to do with both my accessories and shoes. This dress and the black dress in look number two are very comfortable. I didn’t have on any body shape wear but could have gone that route for a smoother silhouette. I think I look a little lumpy in these pictures…real life friends. I think shape wear is a whole other post. Do you have favorites?

Target Haul

Graphic T-Shirts Part 1 of 2

Target North Aurora, Illinois

Do you ever run into Target to get one item and come out with a cart full? Asking for a friend! That might have just happened to me! I don’t recall what I needed but if time permits I like to do a quick run through and see what’s new in the clothing, shoes and accessories departments. On this particular day, there were lots of super fun graphic tees! I grabbed three but could have grabbed lots more. To see a previous post on how to style graphic tees, click HERE. The graphic tees trend continues strong and can actually be super simple to style and look so cute, trendy and be comfy! That’s the trifecta of outfit winning! Additionally, the t-shirts were under $15.00 each!

Blondie Graphic T-Shirt

Blondie Graphic T-Shirt: Target

Blondie brings back happy college memories for me! This particular tee has metallic silver accents, which are difficult to see and numerous colors along the side (blue and yellow). I knew this would be fun to style and could be worn so many ways! How would you style it?

I opted to pair the Blondie Tee with my Level 99 snakeskin print skinny jeans from Evereve, red Marc Fisher booties and my faux red leather with metal accents jacket. All in my closet! I was feel’in kinda sassy in this look. This look could be worn out with girlfriends or date night.

Styling this Blondie t-shirt was so much fun! I ended up pulling out all kinds of options I already had in my closet. Clothes were flying and it was a whirlwind of styling! I hope you come back for part 2 of this blog post to see the 10 ways I styled this one tee…and I probably could have kept going!

AC/DC Graphic T-Shirt

AC/DC Graphic T-Shirt: Target

AC/DC brings back happy high school memories for me. Am I the only one that fashion triggers memories? I’m old enough now that I’ve worn trends in my younger years and am wearing them again in my midlife years. Remember my motto: You’re never too old! No matter your age or size, you can be cute and trendy! There were several AC/DC graphic t-shirts at Target. This one spoke to me because of all of the lightening bolts, colors and patterns. Similar to stars I’m a big fan of lightening bolts. I knew there’d be lots of styling options for this tee as well!

The checkered lightening bolts prompted my purchase of the checkered Vans. I’d been looking at them and wanting them for some time. They’re super comfy and obviously match perfect. My boyfriend Old Navy distressed jeans and cheetah print cuff and earrings (cheetah and zebra print lightening bolt) by LDWatkins Designs and cheetah print belt rounded out my look. Because I’m always cold, I layered on my fringed red jacket, which has been in my closet for years. It was purchased on a girl’s trip to Cape Cod several years ago.

I wore this look on a Friday for work (remote and on Zoom). Then went out to dinner with Mr. FTF and ran errands. Then I wore it to a local farm stand and apple picking. I was definitely feeling this look. It ticked off the three C’s – cute, comfy and colorful!

Bowie Graphic T-Shirt

Sticking with my happy memory theme tied to fashion, David Bowe reminds me of high school. I have another graphic t-shirt of David Bowe, which was purchased because of the colors (pale pink and blue) and wanting to wear it with my tie dye jeans. To see that post, click HERE. Most times that is my criteria, fun colors or interesting elements and I begin to visualize how I’d wear it and what I’d style it with. I visualize from head to toe. This tee spoke to me because of the yellow, pink and golden star embellishments!

I opted to pair this tee with my white jeans. Yes, forget about all of those silly fashion rules and wear the white jeans/pants after Memorial Day. It’s ok and the fashion police won’t give you a ticket! I pulled out my pink suede Sam Edelman booties, added my pink leather earrings from LDWatkins Design and voila. Simple, easy and out the door. I layered on my pink jacket for extra warmth. You could add a denim jacket with any of these tees.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that I’ll wear all of these t-shirts to work out in because most of my workouts involve high energy fun music. When you look cute to workout, you have a better workout…right?! My leggings are from Dick’s Sporting Goods. I was there to look at golf clubs for my husband and spotted these. I’m sure you can guess that I wanted them because of the yellow and pink side stripes! When my Pound Fit instructor Leah spotted my t-shirt, she added a cool down routine to a Bowe song!

The top style trends and prints for 2020 are tie -dye, animal prints and CAMOUFLAGE! Do any of those surprise you? I didn’t think so as you see them all over. FTF has also blogged about most of these trends. To see last weeks blog on the going strong tie dye trend, click HERE. For a previous blog post on leopard print, click HERE. Don’t forget about snake skin print! To read a post on that trend, click HERE.

Camo print is on a wide variety of apparel this season from tank tops to leggings and more! It’s not just green any more, grey and black camo print colorways have taken over, making it less military and more chic. As with any trend, you might want to try camo in small doses….like a scarf, handbag, pumps! I’ve even expanded my own horizons as I used to think of this print as more of a fall and winter print. Since there are more camo color choices and camo pairs well with all colors, I’ve now been wearing it in the spring and summer. Sometimes we need to get out of our own way!

Camo Shorts

In the midwest, fall weather can be a mixed bag from beautiful sunny days with warm temps to crazy cold and frost on the ground and everything in between. On the nice days, and for those of you in southern locals, why not some camo shorts?!

We took our granddaughter to Michigan this summer for camp. After we dropped her off, we went on to Traverse City for a couple of days. My road trip look consisted of these camo shorts and tee both super comfy for the 5+ hour car ride.

While on vacation this summer in Door County, Wisc., I purchased these gray camo shorts with pink side strip at On Deck. Camo isn’t just green any more! I love that these are gray and pink!

Camo Lounge Wear

Last week, I shared my tie dye lounge wear set. We are spending far more time at home and everyone wants comfy, cozy clothes. Lounge wear sets are a perfect solution. They’re comfy, cozy and cute. Do you know that lounge wear sets are trending right now? I got this lounge wear set a couple of years ago. It’s also an example of gray camo vs green. I like the side stripes on the pants and around the arms.

Camo Dress

Dresses are such easy options to put on style and go. I’ve really upped my dress game this past summer! This camo dress appealed to me because of the details: tie shoulders and stripe down the center and can’t forget that it has pockets! This particular camo dress was purchased at a shopping fundraiser at a local boutique called Flair on Third. If you live in my area, I highly recommend this boutique in downtown Geneva. Lots of fun and unique items can be found on Flair on Third. This dress will transition easily into the fall by adding a denim jacket. You could wear it like a tunic over leggings or skinny jeans.

Camo Jacket

This camo jacket was purchased last fall from (believe it or not) Walmart. It’s really great quality and I get lots of compliments when I wear it. I like that it has a peplum for some added interest. A camo jacket is perfect for fall temps. Since camo is considered a neutral it can be paired with any color! I particularly love it with hot pink/fuchsia for a bold statement. What color would you pair it with? I recently wore this look for a day spent walking around Cantigny Park, out to dinner and a little shopping with Mr. FTF. I styled this look around my new camo purse. This crossbody bag was purchased at What to Wear in Traverse City, MI. I love that the strap and stripe are hot pink and orange. The purse also came with a solid olive strap. Do you ever style an outfit around one thing? I do it all the time. This is one of those outfits that you put on and are really feeling it! You could easily wear some khaki or olive colored pants.

Camo Pants

Camo pants like the camo jacket can easily be paired with any color. It’s more about your preference. I happen to have two pairs of camo pants. One pair is pull on and fits similar to leggings. The other is more like a pair of jeans or pants also fitted.

This first look is something I would wear to work. I’ve paired the camo pants with a mustard yellow top (it also comes in other colors) and sandals. I loved the ruffle sleeves and details (you know I love my details!). This look feels totally fall to me.

Sandals: My Closet (Amazon)
Camo Pants (these are the pull on pair): My Closet (New York and Company)

Here are the same pants styled with an oversized hot pink top. This over sized top works with the pants because the pants are fitted. If you wear fitted on the bottom, you should go looser on top. This loose fitting top is figure forgiving and flattering. I did a half tuck to give the look a little more structure.

Pink Top: The Willow Tree
Hot Pink Sock Boots: My Closet (Target)

To switch up this look slightly, I added my olive jacket with faux leather sleeves and switched out the boots for my hot pink slides.

Olive Jacket: My Closet (Macy’s)

For my last look with these particular camo pants, I mixed in cheetah – two trends in one look. Over time, I have gotten much better mixing patterns and being ok with it. Animal prints especially leopard and cheetah are also considered neutrals and pair great with all colors and each other. Are you comfortable pattern mixing? The black long sleeve top has puff sleeves at the shoulders – another current trend.

If you’ve followed FTF for some time, you know that I’m a huge fan of graphic tees. So of course I had to pair a tee with my camo pants. I played off of the green lightening bolt and added some pops of neon green. This fun tee is also from Flair on Third in Geneva (same store I got the camo dress from). These camo pants have a raw hem and are similar to wearing jeans.

When it’s cooler, it’s easy to wear a solid colored top or sweater with camo pants. This top is a deep olive green and I wore a black tank underneath. Black booties complete this look. This is actually a look I wore last year around this time.

I had to share my neon camo cargo pants! These were purchased this past February on a trip to Portland, Oregon at a fun store called The Red Light Clothing Exchange. They sell vintage clothing (resale) and brand new items. My girlfriend and I had so much fun shopping there!

There’s a lot going on with these pants so it’s best to pair them with a solid color. I get they’re not for everyone but for me they’re super fun! Do you like to make bold statements with fashion?

Fallin for Tie Dye

Whether you think tie-dye is totally rad or totally not your style, the psychedelic print from the ’60s is back in a major way. It become a hot quarantine trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Tie dying is a fun project for all ages and can easily be done at home. There are various processes that can be used to tie dye such as using bleach, ice and the typical bright colors. I’m sure You Tube has a multitude of “how to” videos if you’re feeling creative! Let your creative juices flow! Or you can simply go shopping! I’m sure you can guess which one I prefer!

It’s no secret! You know that I have been and probably always will be a big fan of the tie dye trend so I’m elated that it’s been going strong. You might recall that I’ve done several other blog posts on tie dye. The most recent was Feature a Friend post on Jackie of Dyteology. To see that post, click HERE. To see a post on how to tie dye, which featured my friend Mary Anne, click HERE.

Tie Dye Lounge Wear

Since we’ve all be social distancing and spending more time at home, lounge wear has become even more of a trend and why not go for some tie dye lounge wear? I actually purchased mine while we were sheltering in place! This set is buttery soft and can easily be split up and worn with other pieces. Any solid colored bottoms or solid colored tops will easily be a match…you can’t go wrong with all the color choices!

It’s super easy to pair the top with jeans and why not some tie dye jeans?! I had been eyeing these jeans for some time. (There was also a denim jacket with the same coloring! Sadly, my size was sold out.) Since Stein Mart is going out of business (insert tears!), I am scooping up all the things I’ve liked as they go on sale! I know I will get a lot of use out of these jeans!

Tie Dye Jeans

The subtle tie dye look of these jeans, the cut and style all appealed to me. These jeans are by JLo (Kohls). The cut of her jeans always fit me well because of my curvy figure! (I was going to pass up getting these jeans until they went on sale and I had coupons! That’s usually how I roll!) I think the tie dye jeans pair well with a graphic tee. The colors in this David Bowe tee matched great with the pale blue of the jeans. To pull out the pink color, I added my pink denim jacket and pink lace up sandals for a relaxed casual look.

Tie Dye Dresses

This tie dye t-shirt dress was $15. at Target! I couldn’t pass it up! It was one of those Target trips where you run in for one thing and end up leaving with a cart full! Does that ever happen to you? It’s super comfortable and looks put together. I’ve paired it with a white denim jacket but it can easily be worn with blue denim. It could even be worn over jeans or leggings in the fall. This dress would be a great swimsuit coverup. Gosh, the options could be endless! How would you wear it? This little dress is so comfy I feel like I’m walking on clouds!

Recently, I’ve really upped my dress game! Lots of social media influencers influenced my decision to get a tie dye maxi! Maxis are great to style so many ways and for all of the seasons. I paired this one with my Half Tee (To see a previous blog post on Half Tee Layering Solutions, click HERE.). That way I could wear the dress to work and be fully covered on top. As the fall weather seems to be upon us, a long sleeve tee could be worn underneath and layer on a denim jacket. It will be cute with a pair of booties. This particular maxi has pockets! It’s super soft…felt like I was wearing a nightgown to work! You can see I did a front knot at the bottom (trending). This maxi can be worn casually similar to the short tie dye dress. It would be a great beach cover up or a fun date night out look.

Tie Dye T-Shirts

T-shirts are probably the most common tie dye item that comes to mind when thinking about tie dye apparel. This might be a good place to start if you’re not quit sure about wearing the trend. Here are my two most recent tie dye t-shirts. I like to shop unique boutiques while traveling and on vacation. I couldn’t pass up this “Woodstock” Peace and Love t-shirt, which I got in Traverse City at a wonderful store called Sincerely Betty. This t-shirt screams 60’s vibes!

Flare jeans are not a style that I’ve embraced until recently. I now have two pairs. This particular pair screamed 60’s and I think the flare inserts with all the colors and design are so groovy! LOL

Rolling Stone’s image is a well known image and can be found with varying designs on the tongue. I loved the light colors and tie dye version worn here. I think this tee will pair great with my blue tie dye jeans or any blue jeans. T-shirts are such an easy and comfortable option for any outfit and graphic tees continue to trend strong. In the cooler months, they can be worn with moto jackets, cardigans, blazers…the styling options are endless!

Tie Dye Jacket

When my friend Jackie of Dyetology, mentioned that she was going to be making some one of a kind tie dye jackets with embellishments I knew I had to have one of her beautiful and unique pieces. The details are amazing especially for this detail loving gal! I could hardly wait to begin wearing it and styling it. The shoulders are covered in rhinestones. The wrists are wrapped in sparkling bugle beads. One pocket has a metallic silver embellishment and one side has a floral applique! All kinds of fabulousness!!! First, I wore the jacket with a black tee with silver trim v-neck, black jeans and snake skin print belt and booties.

To show another way to style the jacket, I simply switched out my jeans for my metallic midi skirt! I’d also wear the jacket with my tulle skirt! All kinds of fun styling options. All of Jackie’s pieces are beautiful, unique and super high quality! To me, her pieces are investments that I’ll wear for many years to come!

Fallin for Tie Dye Styling of My Fellow Lifestyle and Fashion Blogging Friends from Around the World

Andy: “I am loving the tie-dye trend for fall! My orange and blue tie-dye top is actually a dress – I’ve knotted it and styled it with jeans just for fun. Check out my blog post to see how I styled it as a dress, along with more cute tie-dye pieces, and how I’ve styled them for the fall season. I love to play with my clothes, especially when it’s something as versatile as this!”

Andrea Schwartz of Pearls and Pantsuits

Emma – “I bought this skirt years ago, and while I love it, I find it difficult to style so have only worn it a few times. This theme gave me the impetus to dig it out and give it another chance. I’ve paired it with a sweater with a cute pearl-embellished collar that I bought in a charity shop.”

Emma Peach of Style Splash

Ada – “Not all tie-dye is made the same. Those bright super neon tie dyes are not for me. But give me a cozy, light as air white tee dipped in baby blue and baby pink and we are talking!! It looks like a gorgeous skyline. Fall temperatures have definitely arrived in Michigan so I wore mine with a Faux Leather Black Moto Jacket. Perfect yin+yang between the softness of the girly tee and the rocker edginess of the jacket. Both pieces are by Hollister and they are current!”

Shelbee – “I found this tie dye kimono at Torrid a few years ago and I definitely do not give it enough air time. I love the tie dye pattern on it and the fun fringe details and it is the perfect layering piece for this time of year. I have worn it with jeans and shorts as well, but I think I prefer it with a cute little black dress and sandals.”

Shelbee Montoro of Shelbee on the Edge

Nancy – “I had to search real deep for something tie dye and I found this Primark summer dress that I don’t even own anymore. I guess tie dye is the same as kimonos over here in the Netherlands. Just not that popular. Don’t know why not if you see all my lovely Stylish Monday friends in their beautiful items!”

Nancy Baten of Nancy’s Fashion Style

Nicole – “Traditionally, tie-dye is  associated with the heat of summer and outdoor festivals. However, tie-dyed scarves can also look great in fall and winter as my look demonstrates.”

Romantic Purse

The Romantic Purse as it Looks Today

Falling in Love

Recently, my mom was re-sharing the story behind a beloved purse she’s had for 65 years…older than me! It immediately hit me that it would be a great blog post! Fashion, Love and Sweet Memories all rolled up into one. Here is the story of the romantic purse as written by mom: Kenlyn!

Mom (Kenlyn) and Dad (Donald) in Their Dating Years

“THIS PURSE IS 65 YRS. OLD.  IT WAS A GIFT FROM A ‘”SECRET PAL”. We worked in the same office. I had been looking at it in the window of “The Lou Ann Shop” in Aurora, Il.  “Lou Ann’s” was a great shop for accessories.  I’ve always been an accessory kind of girl. (The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!). My husband, Don, and I were just in the “falling in love” stage of our relationship.

My Mom…now you see where I get my FANCY from!

The purse is just large enough to hold a brown bag lunch.  I would pack a lunch for us. Don would bring our favorite soda.  He picked me up in his shiny new “two tone” baby blue and white Dodge.

My Dad and His Two-Toned Baby Blue and White ’55 Dodge Coronet (My Aunt is the little girl in this picture.)

Off we’d go to the park and our favorite spot by the Fox River.  Some times we even managed our romantic lunch on our lunch hour.

My Dad

The purse got old and the decorations fell off.  Many times , over the years, I put it out to the curb with the trash. I’d stand at the window looking at it perched on top of the trash, remembering our lovely lunches.   Nostalgia got the better of me. I finally rescued my old purse.  I gently hosed it down and set in the sun to dry. My favorite florist replaced the decorative pieces. I have continued to enjoy using it and always receive complimentary comments on that old purse. Its also a perfect fit as a center piece for summer entertaining, on my porch. I’m so very pleased I could not part with it.  Don and I were married on Sep. 6, 1958.”

Dad and Mom on their Wedding Day

I’m so happy that my mom found the only picture she has of her with her purse in it’s original state. It’s a picture from their honeymoon. You can see the purse atop the suitcase. Ironically, my mom still has at least one of those suitcases.

My Mom on Their Honeymoon

The Romantic Purse Today…65 Years Later

This purse is still bringing both of us great joy! I’m grateful she didn’t get rid of it. My mom and I have shared accessories – purses, jewelry over the years. In preparation for writing this post, I styled the purse several ways and took it out with me for a day of fun! 65 years later and the purse is still receiving all kinds of compliments! The romantic purse is timeless!

Meet LaDonna of LDWatkins Designs

LaDonna of LDWatkins Designs

Meeting interesting, creative women is one of the best parts about blogging and the investment of time on social media platforms. Some time ago I began to see posts by LaDonna and by other women wearing her creations and raving all about them. I was lucky enough to win a pair of her earrings in a give away on Instagram. Since I don’t have pierced ears, I asked if LaDonna could make her earrings into clips. I was thrilled to find out she was willing to customize them for me!

LaDonna’s Story

I started a personal influencer IG account a little over three years ago in what I THOUGHT was to help women gain confidence in themselves. About one year later I became interested in leather earrings because they are so light-weight and are super popular.

It’s A Wrap – Rustic Turquoise

My husband encouraged me to start making them myself. At that time, I was looking for a creative outlet as I have had a cake business, where I baked and decorated cakes for weddings and helped with  wedding planning. I found that to be overwhelming and too much time was involved in that business. I still knew I craved a creative outlet even though I had stopped the cake business but just didn’t know what I needed. When I started making earrings, I think initially it was to see if I could. I really felt like I was too old to get younger women to be interested in  wearing my earrings, so I asked my daughter if she would be interested in modeling the styles.

LaDonna’s Daughter Jessica

I can’t say I had a passion for it but I decided I was going to give it one year which was last February and just see where it went. About ten months into it my daughter was doing the modeling but I felt like “I” was missing from my original purpose, to be on social media to help women gain confidence.  I was only putting my thirty something year old daughter out there. How was I going to help women of my age gain confidence when I wasn’t even putting my self out there?  I was the one who lacked confidence. I was saying one thing and doing another. After several conversations with my daughter she truly convinced me that I needed to put myself out there with my earrings. I really lacked the confidence I needed but I just went for it. When I began doing this on a regular basis I saw that there were many women around my age who were interested in what I was putting out there. That is when the business started really evolving into something personal for me.  Once I changed my mindset,  I really began to love to find the perfect leather based on what I was wearing or wanted to wear at the time. I drew interest from handbags, clothing, and shoes. That peaked my interest to find leather that coordinated with some of the latest styles in these accessories and clothing.

I also look at what color and patterns are going to be in style from the  fashion shows but I definitely don’t only rely on that. Sometimes I just see a leather in a color or pattern and get excited about it and just go with it. From leather earrings I went into beading and making leather wrap bracelets and other bracelets as well. I would have to say that my favorite thing to make at the moment is a leather wrap beaded bracelet. One of these typically takes me 2 to 2.5 hours to make and  for me, it is similar to sitting down and reading a book. Its just relaxing!!

Our mom/daughter duo has really helped us to reach a broader  range of women. Now, I really don’t look at this as a business but more of a mission. I want all women to be able to have confidence in what they are wearing no matter what their age is and if that encompasses our jewelry…..then that makes me happy!!

My style recommendations for women would be just branching out of their comfort zone, So whatever that may be for each one. I strongly encourage each person to branch out of their comfort zone, it is liberating.

Accessories

In my world, no outfit is complete until it’s fully accessorized! Additionally, you know that I love everything to match and coordinate so does LaDonna. It’s been great ordering bracelets and earrings from LaDonna especially when I’m searching for a particular color…think neon green! All of her pieces are high quality, super cute and on trend! You can always update your look by updating your accessories and it won’t break the bank!

Leopard

Leopard is considered a neutral and can be paired great with any color. It appears the leopard trend will always be a constant in the fashion world!

Leopard Earrings

Neon Green

Neon continues to trend this summer! If high doses of neon isn’t your thing, it’s easy to add a touch or pop of neon by adding some neon earrings! I absolutely had to have some neon green earrings!

Pink

My earring collection needed a hot pink pair! LaDonna was so nice and gifted me another shade of pink earrings! A girl can never have too many shades of pink her accessory collection!

Bracelets

One bracelet is always enough….said NO fashionista ever! A stack of bracelets is always better! Unless of course, you’re wearing one of LaDonna’s leather cuffs! I’m pictured here with the matching cuff and earrings in Cream/Gold Accent Crocodile.

I’m pictured here with a stack of four bracelets.

Leopard earrings by LaDonna and a stack of three bracelets! (You might recall this look from the blog on how to style bike shorts: click HERE.)
