Our Coast to Coast Style Collective is always a fun blog to write for me as well as participating with the gals to decided our topic/theme. Once that’s accomplished, I begin to determine which looks/outfits I want to share! It’s actually quit the process. Sometimes life gets super busy and we end up missing a month or two. This month Nina and I will be sharing the summer short trends for 2023! Andy and Suzanne hope to rejoin us in August!

Top 5 Summer Short Trends 2023

You may be asking yourself who wears shorts over 60! I would promptly raise my hand and say, why of course, I wear shorts and have no intention of stopping! Age should never determine style or what you can wear! Therefore, why would shorts be any different?! Fashion Trends and Friends has done several blogs about shorts over the years. What’s Trending in Shorts You Ask?

Here’s what I found: THE MOST FASHIONABLE SHORTS FOR 2023

• 1 TWEED SHORTS. Forever iconic, and some of the most fashionable shorts of the season, short tweed shorts will become your wardrobe mainstay.
• 2 HOT PANTS – SUPER SHORT SHORTS
• 3 TAILORED SHORTS
• 4 LEATHER SHORTS
• 5 SHORT FRINGED DENIM SHORTS

You might look at the list and thing nope…absolutely not! I’d like to challenge you to look at the list again and consider if any of these might appeal to you with slight modifications. In other words, you can update your look, if that’s important to you, but you don’t have to wear it exactly as it’s described here. Tweed shorts is an easy yes for me! I’ve been looking at tweed short suits but haven’t purchased any as of yet. As described here, I think it’s a classic good look that actually can be worn for years to come! I’ve been considering this tweed short suit. It also comes in pink! In my opinion, a tweed shorts suit can be easily styled and worn for so many occasions. It would be easy to accessorize and you’re out the door looking polished!

Hot Pants and Super Short Shorts

This trend will not be for me nor can I figure a way to make it work if I wanted to … what are your thoughts? For some reason they remind me of gym uniforms or panties. I think they might look cute on my granddaughter but it’s a pass for me! Not every trend has to be for everyone. Would you wear them? Remember: Wear what makes you happy!

Tailored Shorts

This is a trend I can embrace and that will be classic for years to come! You can easily put your own spin on what constitutes tailored for you as well as the length. My preference is about mid thigh for my short length although you can find shorts in all lengths to fit your personal preference! I often remind the women that I’ve been styling that they should absolutely love what there wearing or don’t buy it/keep it!

When you find something that you love, fits great and is figure flattering, makes you feel confident and happy, I recommend buying it in all the colors. I followed my own advice and got these tailored shorts in denim, white and green. Previously, I shared my love of the Mariner wide leg jeans so when I found out they made them in shorts I immediately knew I would love them.

Denim Tailored Shorts

Those of you who have followed me for some time know that shorts and a tee are pretty much my summer uniform. I think shorts are easily elevated for a fun day out with your gal pals, dinner date, shopping, you name it. Where can you wear denim shorts you ask? Any where you want! I’ve paired my denim shorts with two floral tops both with peplums, which are so figure flattering on my hourglass shape. Denim shorts pair with any colors and any prints so there are no pairing restrictions! Have fun with your style and the colors you choose! Colors can elevate your mood! I know they always make me happy!

Here is an up close view of the Mariner shorts! The button details add interest and make these shorts not your average denim every day shorts. They are a medium wash and have a nice amount of stretch in them but not too much.

This Amazon grreen slides are new to my sandal collection. Squared off toe box is trending as is the chunky heel and both of these features make them comfortable and easy to walk in for me. Can you see the rose gold mirror on the inner heel? You know details make me so happy! These slides also come in gold!

Green Tailored Shorts

The same floral tops pair great with the green shorts! If you have tops you already love in your wardrobe, you can easily match them to a new pair of shorts. Combining newly purchased items with things I already have and love wearing is often my go to for styling. While I won’t be sharing any tees with the shorts today, tees are also an easy option with these shorts. What colors would you match with the green shorts…yellow, blue, orange, pink (pink and green are a hot color combination right now), black, white…

Here is the pink and green trend together although the pink is minimal in the large flowers. I love the stems coming off of the flowers and how they tie into the green in the shorts.

I couldn’t resist sharing this shorts suit in Amazon Green from head to toe! I think it’s so beautiful, classic and easily worn from day into night. It demonstrates yet another way to wear shorts and the versatility of looks you can achieve.

White Tailored Shorts

White tailored shorts are a classic summer wardrobe staple. They can be worn with anything and styled with any top for any occasion! Remember when you find an item of clothing that you love and it’s figure flattering buy all the colors that you’d like to add to your wardrobe! As you can see the long sleeved floral blouse goes great with all three pairs: denim, green and white shorts.

I couldn’t resist pairing my cropped tweed sequined blazer with my white Mariner shorts for a fancier look! It’s hard to see but I’m wearing my grandma’s pink pearl earrings. My white cami has been in my closet for a long time and is also a wardrobe staple. Sadly, my lace up sandals broke the day I wore them and went in the trash but I had many years of use from them…even fashionistas have fashion faux pas! The sequin tweed blazer is no longer available but you can easily add a tweed blazer of any color, cut and style to a pair of white shorts.

Here is a more casual look with the white shorts so you can see how easily they can be styled down because you know I always am a little extra! It is a myth that vertical stripes add width to your frame. If you haven’t tried wearing vertical stripes give them a try. You just might be surprised how good they look and that they don’t add width! Myth busted!

Leather Shorts

The leather shorts trend continues to be strong this summer! I happen to have them in black, pink and brown! I’m a huge fan of the trend..faux leather shorts pair great with almost any type of top, add a blazer, denim jacket…lots and lots of styling options! Pictured here: What I wore to an outdoor musical festival. What I wore to get my hair done and run errands. What I wore to work. Don’t limit your thinking on how and where you can rock the faux leather shorts trend. If you’re buying a classic piece that will be in your closet for years to come, you might want to spend a little more especially if it’s going to be a wardrobe staple. If you want to try the faux leather short’s trend, you want to look for quality and affordability as you might not keep or want to wear it for years especially since trends tend to come and go although I’m going on several years in a row of wearing mine! You know I like to sassy up my looks now and then!

Denim Fringed Shorts

My fringed denim shorts have now been in my closet for the past two years. I’ll be wearing them again this year and still loving them! This is how I make the trend work for me. Here are two ways I’ve styled them. However, they would pretty much pair with almost any top. I was initially attracted to not only the fringed edges but also the ombre look!

If I were to add a new pair of fringed denim shorts to my wardrobe, I’d pick these. I’ve actually been looking at them for some time. I bet they’re super comfy and would be easily worn with any style of top especially my summer uniform – tees and shorts! (Update: I ordered them!)

I’m Adding a Sixth Shorts Trend Category: Short Sets

Short sets are popping up every where and I’m totally here for them especially since they’re my favorite matchy matchy but can be easily split apart and worn separately with other items. If you want to grab an outfit and go, this takes all the guess work out of it. I’m especially seeing oversized tops, shirts, and button downs paired with shorts.

This black and white shorts set is super soft and comfy! The button down top can easily be worn open as I did here or buttoned up. It can also be tucked various ways or tied at the waist providing you with lots of styling options. The shorts are pull on drawstring with pockets. I went out of my comfort zone and wore a cropped top although not super crop! Remember you can make the trends work for you! Lastly, it would be easy and fun to add a pop of bright summer color to this shorts set!

The minute I spotted this short set I knew I absolutely had to have it; and I have to say I feel pretty spectacular in it! The colors and patterns, fit, comfort and figure flattering make it all a win for me! Plus I get to wear these fantastically fun lace up sandals in satin pink and orange! This is dopamine dressing at it’s finest! I can guarantee that I’ll be wearing this short set over and over again. Plus the top and shorts can easily be paired with other things for lots and lots of styling options! Sadly, my sandals are from last summer. The top is sold out already. However, these shorts are easily paired with any solid color top in pink, orange, red, white and they’re super comfy, fully lined, have pockets, pull on drawstring.
